Lewis landed the more effective powerful punches, and alot of Mercer's punches were window dressing. This was the same fight people thought Lewis' "bad chin" would be exposed against Mercer's KO power. They were wrong

How long does it take for your knuckles to toughen and get used to all the punching? I could barely hit the bag today the pain was so much in the beginning, strangely as time went on in class it got better and I could hit harder for some reason. I'm wrapping my hands and have good 16 ounce gloves.

If your punch technique is on point it shouldn't hurt too bad.
It got better as class went on because your technique and accuracy probably improved some
You want to think about your front 2 knuckles on each hand as a stabbing weapon almost. Every time you make contact you're punching a tiny hole straight through the center of the target. Whatever angle I hit the bag at, I envision a line going from my front two knuckles straight thru the center of the bag and out the other side
Don't just think of your glove, or your whole hand as a club.
