Schaefer Shakes Head at De La Hoya's Criticism of Boxing in 2016

"When I see what I saw in the last few weeks... negative articles and negative stories about the sport... 'the worst year ever' and stuff like that. And it comes from us and we are stakeholders in the sport. How stupid is that? Let's talk about the positives. Let's look at the glass half full and not half empty. This last quarter, these are some of the best possible matchups that are going to happen in the next three to four weeks, in the next few months or whatever - let's talk about that,"
Schaefer said.

"Let's not go and tell the whole world what a horrible year it was. Let's tell them what a great year it's going to be and what's on the horizon with the shows that [Showtime Sports head] Stephen Espinoza announced and everything else. We need to be positive and not negative. And that's what hurts the sport and it hurts you guys from the media as well.
Look at how many newspapers are not covering the sport. Look at how many sports writers and boxing writers who have lost their jobs. If you keep telling everybody how sh*tty of a sport it is and how horrible it is.. then guess what - we're all going to be unemployed."

Dan Rafael chat wrap 10/28:

- Doubts we ever see Pacquiao vs. Crawford. Right now believes both Pacquiao and Roach don't want that type of fight this late in his career.
- Believes a Lomachenko fight vs. Pacquiao is more likely than Crawford vs. Pacquiao.
- Mayweather vs. Crawford? Doubt that ever happens.
- Pacquiao vs. Vargas will do 300k buys if they are lucky.
- HBO approved Molina, Orozco, Diaz, and Troyanovsky as opponents for Crawford. Orozco turned the fight down. His preferred opponent would have been Diaz. Molina is a bad opponent.
- Likely people who will be offered for Canelo's 160 lb debut: Lemieux, BJS, and Lee.
- Doubtful we see Canelo vs. Eubank Jr. Eubank means nothing here in the US and is difficult to deal with.
- Still expects Mayweather to come back for fight 50.
- A lot easier to get better fights when PBC works with Showtime because PBC gets a large rights fee. When PBC doesn't involve Showtime they cover all the costs themselves.
- Showtime's year was really not that bad. What was bad was having no dates from August to November.
- Wlad is not ducking Joshua. Wlad said from the beginning that the WBA title had to be on the line and the WBA still hasn't ruled. Also that fight is a mega fight and it would be stupid to promote it on only 5 weeks notice. He did also have a minor injury.
- If Wlad vs. Joshua happens it will be in March/April.
- Whatever you think about Eric Molina (vs. Joshua), he has a big heart and can punch.
- PBC is letting Molina fight Crawford on HBO because it gives Molina an opportunity, which is Haymon's job. Plus he gets one of his fighters a fight and he sheds any obligation of paying him or providing a date.
- Frampton vs. LSC 2 is a 50/50 fight. He could see Frampton winning in the same way or LSC making adjustments and pulling it out.
- Hopkins will be the favorite vs. Smith.
- Leonard vs. Hopkins at 160? Hopkins.
- Technically the WBO could strip BJS after 9 months of inactivity, but it is not mandatory.
- Nothing on the horizon for Imam. Typical for a Don King fighter. A shame.
- Abner Mares has seen better days, is favoring Cueller in their fight.
- Prichard Colon is still in a coma in the care of his family. It is not good, doesn't seem like he will recover.
- Williams, who was the opponent vs. Colon causing the coma, has not fought due to a shoulder injury, it is not because of the Colon situation.
- Vinny Pazienza said he really enjoyed the movie "Bleed For This" based on him and it tells his story well.
- The Andrade vs. Culcay fight is not happening on Nov. 5, unless something major changes.
- Pacquiao vs. Trinidad at 147? Trinidad.
- Jermell Charlo vs. Hatley? Perhaps next year. PBC has some dates, Showtime has undercards, or maybe Spike as well.
- Cotto and Canelo vs. Paul Williams would have been great fights. He would have given them problems due to his height, reach, and activity.
- Chocolatito for HOF? Yes.
- Prime Sergio vs. Canelo at 154? Sergio.
- Alfonso Blanco is undeserving of his WBA title. He got it when the WBA was handing them out like candy. Given his inactivity, the WBA should strip him because they say they want to consolidate belts.
- Right now you cannot do a boxing event without the new insurance requirements and currently there is no company offering that approved by the state. Until that is figured out, NYC cannot have any boxing events. There are supposed to be approved insurance policies sometime soon.
- When a fighter gets hurt (like Paul Williams) there is nothing that requires a promoter to help their fighter. Some promoters have helped and some certainly would if something happened.
- Doesn't see Brandon Rios getting any more meaningful fights.
- Vazquez Jr. vs. Lopez? Vazquez.
- Seeing Erik Morales at weigh-ins was scary. When he struggled at 126 he had to have guys help him to the scale.
- Brook can seek a 60 day medical exception from the IBF if he wants to consider keeping his belt. Likely he moves up to 154.
- Bigger mainstream star: Tyson or SRL? Tyson.
- Thoughts on a Broner vs. Khan fight? Likes it.
- Rank the fights: 1. Jirov-Toney, 2. Margarito-Cotto 1, 3. Pavlik-Taylor 1, 4. Casamayor-Katsidis.
- Is Duran the best ever at 147? He was the best ever at 135, not 147.
- Alex Arthur vs. Michael Gomez was a great British fight.
- Expect a spring return for Matthysse.

:dwillhuh:....I don't know what this means but there's no way any boxing fan can support those shaefer comments. dude says stockholders shouldn't make comments like that. he's basically saying no matter what kind of bullshyt matchups we put on just be positive and don't call us out for it:mjcry:....dude wants boxing fans to have no backbone and accept whatever we get.

I agree with Oscar in that this could have been a better year. But ODH is also part of the problem.

i'm not saying oscar isn't part of the problem. all of these guys from top to bottom have been on some bullshyt. but telling us to stay quiet and just put a smile on our face so you can keep your job is some bullshyt. I give a fukk about your job. as long as we have great fights scheduled i'ma be happy. it gives me something to look forward to. garcia-thurman and mares-cuellar is a great start to 2017. as long as those type of matchups keep getting signed, I don't think any fan will complain. but all these guys deserve to be shytted on for what happened in 2016. the fans are what drive the sport, we got a right to speak our minds.:yeshrug:

For the record after the Matthysse and Soto fights, I was done with Molina. Hated him as an opponent for Broner. He got a proper shellacking tho, pity Broner didn't give him the Demarco treatment. He showed another dimension against Rulan and pitched a lesson, but I don't think that elevates him to a B side for a p4p opponent like Crawford. Molina vs Alexander or Ghost ain't bad on some Spike card shyt, but :camby: with this Crawford fight. Diaz would have been a better opponent by far. He gave Peterson a great fight (I thought it could have been a draw or go either way) and beat Vasquez pretty soundly. Molina might be the bigger name, but there's a lot of mileage on that heavy bag.

#ConsistencyCops

Crawford getting a slight pass from the media and some fans for this shyt, but :manny:. It's better than not fighting. Hell, I wish #Superman #Thurminators #GGGoodboys #AboutBillions got end of the year fights.

I see this fight looking like Donaire vs Arce. A quick bomb out and everybody starts anticipating Crawford next fight. I think Jean, Lundy, and Dulorme, were better opponents (not by much) but at least fresher.

only thing I don't agree with. I mean who in boxing history gets praised for giving guys close fights....history don't remember them.lol

and if yall wanna give diaz a win over him then we gonna have to go back and change all kinds of shyt. boxing so filled with fukkery.

but people only wanna say guys got robbed when it fits their agenda or when they truly believe a guy got robbed. what if I don't think diaz got robbed? does that mean my opinion is better now bout craw/Molina?..lol....see its all an opinion that cant hold any realistic weight in an argument.

then I don't see how yall claiming provo would be impressive win for craw but not the guy who just beat him. its just stupid.

but I don't like the fight at all but im gonna call out shyt I see fit too.
