Spence: Thurman Has Been Making Excuses; I'm Waiting On Him

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK – Errol Spence Jr. respects that Keith Thurman must complete his rehabilitation from elbow surgery before considering fighting him.

Spence even understands Thurman wanting a tune-up bout before embracing their dangerous welterweight championship unification fight. Beyond that, though, Spence doesn’t think there’s any reason they can’t fight after Spence faces Lamont Peterson in January and Thurman meets an undetermined opponent either late in February or sometime in March.

“My thoughts been what it’s been,” Spence said during a press conference Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “Since I was 15-0, I said I would fight Keith Thurman or anybody in the top five. Like he said, he’s gotta wait until he get ready and gotta go through rehab. But I’m ready when he is. I’m always ready. So it don’t matter if it’s the first quarter or it’s second quarter [of 2018] or if it’s [the] next year, you know, I’m gonna be ready.”

Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs, 1 NC), the WBA/WBC 147-pound champion, indicated later in the press conference that they’ll determine welterweight supremacy “within one to two years.” Spence (22-0, 19 KOs), the IBF welterweight champ, certainly sounded ready to fight Thurman sooner than that.

“I’m always ready to fight the best,” Spence said. “I have a goal. I have a dream to be the undisputed welterweight champion of the world and I’m not gonna let anybody stop me from that path. So this is the fight that I’ve been wanting with Keith Thurman for the longest. So he’s been making excuses. Said that I haven’t proven myself, I ain’t win a world title, said he was gonna bust my bubble. So, I mean, I’m waiting to find out what he’s gonna do.”

Thurman made it clear he wants to face Spence as well, just when the time is right.

“I look forward to the fight,” Thurman said. “I look forward to great competition, you know, and Errol is that. He’s great competition. You know, my motto’s stayed the same. I’ve got an 0 and I’m not afraid to let it go. If you can beat me, beat me. Because when I train and when I fight, I give it my best. And even if you start getting at me, it just makes me dig. You know, a lot of people don’t understand what’s it like to live the life of a fighter. But I’m that true warrior.”

Spence: Thurman Has Been Making Excuses; I'm Waiting On Him

I understand that Spence wants unify but I also understand why Thurman doesn't say directly that "yeah at x time we gonna fight". He earned his stripes, became unified with beating Porter and Swift now he got injured and he still doesn't feel he gets his respect many ppl just look at him as the next step in Spence's evolution and try to pressure him into fighting Spence immediately.

I get why is that frustrating.

I'm a fan of both of them but I'd pick Spence to win probably but I can't blame Thurman for not responding directly yet, he just came back from an injury and before that he fought Porter and Swift back to back, he must be frustrated that coming back a bunch of Floyd stans trolling on his Instagram again calling him words for not fighting Spence yet.

Thurman somehow hasn't got the backing of Spence or Danny Garcia neither from the fans nor from the boxing world and seems like it's irritating for many people that he's the only unified 147 champion now but honestly I don't understand why, dude is a great character, one of the best characters in boxing now without being a fool who overdoes a gimmick. Maybe he is just too weird as a person for some boxing fans, idk, but I like what he stands for.
True student of the game, can talk well and he really is unique, didn't take any gimmicky role, like the cocky heel or the always nodding-smiling good guy.
Thurman is being underappreciated.

think both Spence and him want the fight and it will probably happen in next year

Thurman been talking that shyt n ducking Spence for years... Spence brook win surpasses, Thurman's wins which he received gifts on arguably both.....

This is simply a case of years of bytch coming back to haunt Keith

I'm at peace ass nikka:mjpls: :why:

Crawford has to build his name at welter first ass nikka:scust:

Its gonna be interesting to see the walls close on him, post Peterson Spence, it will be confusion on who his mandatory would be swift, Spence, Crawford or Porter, can't wait to see the bytch in keith continue to be exposed:mjgrin:

to be fair with Breadman the Ped topic is kinda his obsession anyway, if you start reading his mailbags and drink every time he brings up the importance of dope testing, Vada etc... you will be drunk in half an hour... I think sometimes he even over highlight the problem

and secondly these are typically the situations when ped accusations start to fly regardless of his personal dislike toward the Charlos.
Jermell had 12 stoppage wins out of 27 wins, only 3 out of them were classic one punch KOs then he becomes a monster puncher and scores 3 one punch KOs in a row... now I don't say that "right he's a PED user" cause if there's no proof what's the point in trying to destroy a man's reputation who's maybe totally innocent, this is why even in cases like this you don't often hear people straight up calling these fighters ped abusers but these are typically the situations when accusations start to fly...

Remember when Povetkin used to struggle with a cruiserweight Huck and etc and then after the Kltischko fight he turned into some monster puncher somehow tearing up top 10 hws the way he never did before? That was similar situation and Povetkin proved to be a ped abuser since, we will see what about Charlo later, his situation is a little less suspect though cause he changed trainers while I don't remember Povetkin doing such thing but then the question pops up why his brother could still become a big puncher with Ronnie Shields but not him?

So overall straight accusation is very risky and not suggested but these cases are typically the ones when more ppl start to wonder about things regardless of Breadman's exiting personal dislike toward the Charlo brothers
Tough call with the Charlo's. Two Haymon fighters who were brought along properly. I agree they were struggle fighters and I didn't follow them that closely because it never seemed like they were going to turn the corner into elite. Now they are. It could be PED's...Breadman likes to talk about it and claims he gets lots of inside info...but it also could be that these two just popped and are entering their primes. We have seen that before as well. Like I said above, these two are fighters that were brought along properly in the Haymon stable and appear ready for the bright lights. Haymon needs to emulate what was done with the Charlo's more with his other young fighters for their success as well.

Only with Jermell imo, Jermall always was a power puncher

Charlos are definitely roiding been following them off from the start to being prospects, to me feeling the were just short of having the goods, to randomly turning into murderers....Also they used to be humble quiet as church mouses, now they flowing with whatever in people face, hooting n hollering, like hyena's, initimdating and bullying nikkas, almost scaring me from my couch like those the type of demons, you have to shoot as a fist fight wouldn't be enough with the shyt they spew:picard:

I must also attributed fact that trout started very fast. It made for a great fight but that's just not his style. He's a patient counterpunch of for the most part.

But I'm glad he did what he did he raised his stock. It's up to him if he wants to fight again and he can definitely jump inti another fight and get someone in the top 10 and he can either still be a contender or a gatekeeper.

True shyt breh.
They said he threw like 200 punches by the 4th rd. That was crazy. There was no way he was gonna keep that up.
