Started from the bottom, now he’s here. WBC junior bantamweight Srisaket Sor Rungvisai literally came from the gutter to score a massive upset of Roman Gonzalez, who was widely regarded as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.
With that win Sor Rungvisai immediately became a national hero for his native Thailand which comes with it’s own set of perks — like a job-in-waiting and a meet-and-greet with Thailand’s prime minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, as reported by RingTV.
“It is very special for me,” Srisaket told RingTV.com through his promoter, Thainchai Pisitwuttinan of Nakornloung Promotions. “I am very proud to be recognized for my achievement from the Prime Minister. It is a great honor for me and my family.”
Specifically, one of Sor Rungvisai’s new benefits will be place in high society where he will become a sergeant in the Thai police force. That won’t at all interfere with his ongoing boxing career, but it will prove plenty beneficial once that chapter comes to a close. Sor Rungvisai explains how his life has taken a dramatic turn for the better since knocking off the P4P king:
“Everything changed from the moment I touched Thailand soil,” he explained. Since it was such a historical victory, we have been receiving a lot of attention and support from the public and all media.
“Not too long ago, I was a garbage collector searching for food from the garbage on difficult days, but I fought my way to be the world champion through countless hours in the gym. I hope I was able to set an example to the youth that we can change our destiny through hard work and determination.”
Sor Rungvisai goes on to reiterate how proud he is to have beaten the best boxer in the world and to have proven that Thailand is a nation of warriors. Now Sor Rungvisai’s handlers will look for new opportunities in the U.S. for their fighter — where he should have more opportunities following a high profile win. Certainly a rematch with Roman Gonzalez will be in the cards, which would be another treat for boxing fans.
