PC: How's it going my man?
RP: Good, man. I just got out of the gym.
PC: The last time we saw you in the ring was in June. You had an eye injury and a baby girl since. How is everything coming along?
RP: Everything is great now. I just had a daughter about 3 months ago. She is getting a lil' big. I had a lil' injury with my eye, but I'm all good now. Everything is healed up and the doctor released me, so I'm straight. I'm in the gym just doing a little sparring just to stay ready for the next date.
PC: Would you say that time away was needed or not really?
RP: Nah, I wouldn't say so. I'm always in the gym no matter what; before the injury, during the injury, and after the injury, I was still in the gym. I'm always training no matter what. It's different from training camp of course. My schedule is just a little different from training camp, but I'm always in the gym. I'm not going to say I needed time off. I like to be active and, more than anything, I like to fight. Nah...I don't think I needed the time off.
PC: You put it out there on social media the other day; you said you don't feel like Ashley Theophane would go 5 rounds with you and that you would smash Adrien Broner. No disrespect to Adrian Granados because I feel he has a shot, but he used to spar with Broner. When you see Broner take fights like this, do you feel like that's part of the problem?
RP: Yeah, of course. I'm pretty sure he cannot make 140 anymore and that's why he's fighting catchweights and all that type of stuff. I don't think he can make 140 anymore. You can see how big he walks around. I don't think he's a 47-pounder. He can't compete...of course he can compete at 147 if matched right, but as far as being in the title hunt or getting a belt there and being a top contender at 47, I don't think he can do that. I'm not going to say he's not big enough, but at that weight, there are too many big name guys that I don't think he could compete with or beat. He wouldn't be able to do what he did in the lower weight classes at 47 and I don't think he can make 40 again, so of course he's going to try and go somewhere in between that.
PC: What is it about Broner that leads you to believe that you can smash him if you were to fight him?
RP: I just think because of my style. He's a natural athlete, he's gifted, and if he trains right, he can fight, of course, but I just think he's never seen nothing like me as far as my mindset goes. I just feel like I'm more of a savage. My whole objective is to hurt my opponents. I don't care about boxing around. Of course if I need to, I can switch it up and box and things like that, but I want to go in there and snatch my opponent up and hurt my opponent. I just feel like he fought one person that had that same mindset as I have and they killed him, which is Maidana. He had that same mindset where he don't care about boxing; he just want to go in there and fight you rough and hurt you, and you saw what happened when Broner fought that. When he fought Maidana, he basically got killed. And I think...of course I don't know how strong Maidana is or nothing like that, but I think if I hit him with shots like Maidana hit him with, he won't be able to get up from that. I know he won't be able to get up from that. If I hit him flush all of those times like Maidana was able to, I don't think he will be able to go 12 rounds with me. I still think he is a skilled athlete and a natural fighter, but at the same time, I just don't think he would be able to last with me. Maybe he could last 12 rounds with me, I don't know; I've never been in the ring with him before, but I don't see it. He gets hit a lot and he lands shots on people with no defense. I got great defense. I don't get hit too much and at the same time, when I hit somebody, I'm going to hurt them. That's my whole objective is to hurt my opponent.
PC: When we last spoke, you said Ashley Theophane would be a perfect fight for you. You said he wouldn't even last 5 rounds. Is that the fight or the type of opponent you want to face in your next bout?
RP: Yeah, of course. I know my name is not big enough yet for like an Adrien Broner. I'll probably have to prove myself a little bit. Adrien Broner knocked Theophane out in the 9th round, so if I knocked him out in say the 3rd round, then that would kind of force his hand to fight me. I was just on Facebook talking or whatever, but I want a belt. Adrien Broner doesn't have a belt, Ashley Theophane doesn't have a belt, and my goal is to have a belt. I'm not really concerned about the name. I think I would walk through both of them, but I'm not too concerned about names. I want one of them belts soon.
PC: And you're a southpaw with 15 of your 18 wins coming by way of knockout; people won't be knocking your door down to fight you. You have to make some noise and get people to bite the bait so to speak.
RP: Yeah, of course I know people are not going to want to fight me. I've been having that problem since I turned pro and even in the amateurs a lil' bit. People didn't want to fight me because I know what I am. I'm a strong southpaw and at the same time, I'm going in there to hurt people. I know a lot of fighters don't want to take that risk, so I guess I do have to call people out and go at their neck.
PC: Have you set any goals for 2017, and if so, what are they?
RP: They can line them up and I'll pick them apart. I'm trying to run through whoever is in front of me. I want the belt. Hopefully 2017 will bring me a championship. I think that's what we are really planning for and hopefully in 2017, I will get a shot at one of the belts, and like I said, whoever they put in front of me, I'm going to try and run through 'em. That's my goal, but I want the belt at the same time too.
PC: In a perfect world, how many times you fighting next year?
RP: Man, 4 to 5 times a year is good for me. Maybe 5 might be too much, but 4 times a year, once every 3 months, is perfect to me. That's a perfect lil' deal for me. That would be good.
PC: I can't wait to see you back in there my man and keep representing for Louisiana. Give me something in closing my man.
RP: I appreciate you doing an interview with me. Be on the lookout, 2017 should be a big year for me.
Like I said, everything they put in front of me, I'm going out and trying to smash. I'm not saying it will be that easy with everybody, but I don't see no competition for me at 140. The best person out there of course is Terence Crawford, and I do respect him as a champion, but at the same time, I'll definitely get in there with him. I know I don't have enough fights for that yet. He's looking for that Pacquiao fight, and he should because there is money in that fight. There is one of the Russian's that's got a belt and Ricky Burns, I definitely wanna try and get that belt from him. I want a belt. Broner fighting Granados next and most likely, he'll win that and he's probably going to go after Ricky Burns, but like I said, I don't think he could make 140 anymore. So hopefully I can get that shot at Ricky Burns, get that belt, and go from there; Broner or whoever. Next year is going to be a big year for me and hopefully I'll have the belt next year as well. I want one of them belts in 2017!
