Now a Mexican Legend calling Canelo out
Marquez To Canelo: Go To Golden Boy, Demand Golovkin Now!
By Miguel Rivera
Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is hoping Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs) applies pressure on his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, to finalize a fall showdown with WBC/IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
The World Boxing Council had previously ordered Canelo to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin. They set a deadline with a purse bid scheduled for May 24th in Mexico City.
Canelo vacated his title on Wednesday, stating that he wasn't in favor of the rapidly approaching deadline from the sanctioning body. A few hours after Canelo's decision, the WBC officially named Golovkin as their world champion.
Marquez wants Canelo to showcase his status as a superstar, and a top level fighter, by moving forward with Golovkin. He sees no reason for the fight to be postponed to a later date - and Marquez also gives Canelo a very good chance of beating the heavily favored middleweight king.
"Right now it is the right moment [to make this fight]. It is the right time to make good business. I as the fighter would speak with my promoter and ask him for the fight, because the people want the fight and he will be paid well for a huge pay-per-view event. That's what I suggest because the boss is the fighter. The promoter makes the fight and puts together the events, but the one who has the upper hand is the fighter," Marquez stated on Golpe a Golpe.
Marquez views Golovkin as the biggest financial opportunity for Canelo. He's heard rumors that Canelo could target his Golden Boy stablemate, former IBF champion David Lemieux, but the Mexican veteran sees that contest as a waste of time.
"If they want to talk about business, the best business is with GGG. He will not make that kind of money with Lemieux or anyone else," Marquez said.
