One door closes and another door opens.
BoxingScene.com recently reported that former champion Brandon Rios parted ways with his longtime trainer Robert Garcia.
It didn't take long for Garcia to pick up a new client. Former three division champion Abner Mares has decided to hire Garcia after parting ways with trainer Clemente Medina.
Mares has made several changes to his corner in recent years, including a brief stint with Virgil Hunter.
Garcia also trains Marcos Maidana, Mikey Garcia, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and a few other fighters.
BoxingScene reported on Wednesday that there are ongoing discussions for Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs) to face another former three division champion in Fernando Montiel (54-5-2, 39KOs), who in his last fight lost a twelve round unanimous decision when he challenged IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby last October in Glendale, Arizona.
Mares-Montiel is being targeted for a date in March.
In his last ring appearance in August, Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs) lost a twelve round decision when he fought Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA featherweight championship in one of the more memorable fights of the year.
Mares has already had a few sessions with Garcia and he really feels a good connection with the Oxnard coach. Garcia likes to see offense and aggression in his fighters, which is something that Mares appreciates.
"I've known [Garcia] for some time. He is a great person, a great coach. Just look at all of the world champions that he's had. There is no doubt [about his abilities as a trainer]. I think his way of coaching is very well suited to what I like, a more aggressive style but with movements of the waist and head," Mares told ESPN Deportes.
Mares wants to get a world title shot by the end of the year. He has his eye on WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr., IBF champ Lee Selby and he's demanding to get a second fight with Santa Cruz for his WBA championship.
