Thurman on Porter: I'll Drop Bombs, Make it an Early Night!
By Edward Chaykovsky
WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith "One Time" Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) looks forwards to a potential fight with Shawn “Showtime” Porter, who previously held the IBF world title.
Both fighters have been out of the ring for some time now. Thurman last fought in July when he knocked out Luis Collazo in seven rounds, while Porter (26-1-1, 16KOs) won an upset twelve round unanimous decision over four division world champion Adrien Broner in June.
They were expected to face each other in December. That never happened. Then they were expected to face each other in January, but that won’t happen either. The latest word is, the fight will come down in late February.
"I love the fight. Shawn Porter comes to fight. He's young, he's strong. He has his father in his ear 24/7. I know Shawn Porter from way back in the amateur days. We go way back. I brought him in to a sparring camp when I was scheduled to face Marcos Maidana 3 years ago. Like I said I know him very well. He's strong. He doesn’t have the same amount of knockouts as me, but if he sits down on his punch it has an effect. He's shown it throughout his career. But with eight ounce gloves I think it would be a tremendous fight," Thurman said.
Thurman says there won't be any running and boxing, he plans to make it a fight and aims to become the first fight to knock Porter out.
Porter suffered his first defeat last year, when he lost a close twelve round decision, and his IBF world title, to British fighter Kell Brook.
"Some people think I'm might try to run all night, but if this fight gets made I'm ready to drop bombs and make it an early night," Thurman warned.
