MICKEY BEY EXCITED TO RETURN TO THE RING THIS FRIDAY: "A GOOD PERFORMANCE WILL GET MY RANKING UP"
By Press Release | December 17, 2015
mickeybey.jpg

Cleveland born lightweight fighter Mickey "The Spirit" Bey Jr is making his long anticipated return to action Saturday, December 18th at the Pearl Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. He takes on Naim Nelson on a Premier Boxing Champions card. Mickey has not seen combat since his IBF world lightweight title victory on September 14th 2014.

Bey is excited to get back to business and is looking forward to the opportunities a victory will afford his flourishing career. "A good performance will get my ranking up. There's also talk about me fighting back in Ohio, possibly on the Adrien Broner-Ashley Theophane card. It's all up to me."

For Bey, all that matters is maintaining his focus and keeping spiritually grounded. "Skills, talent and a good heart and spirit will always rise to the top." says Bey. In keeping with the legacy of those who inspire him including Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns, Bey wants his name to be among those great fighters who leave a legacy behind the ropes. "Before it's all said and done, I want to be one of the best to ever lace up and knowing that I overcame a lot of adversity to achieve greatness in the sport while staying grounded, I want to finish on top."

Al Haymon settles lawsuit with Bad Dog Productions

While manager/adviser and Premier Boxing Champions creator Al Haymon still faces a pair of nine-figure lawsuits from Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, he has settled a third, lower-profile suit against him.

Bad Dog Productions filed suit against Haymon and promoter Warriors Boxing in Miami last year, contending that they interfered with the promotional contract Bad Dog had with then-junior lightweight titlist Rances Barthelemy (23-0, 13 KOs), who is scheduled to face Denis Shafikov (36-1-1, 19 KOs) for a vacant lightweight world title on Friday night in a Spike-televised PBC card at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

On Thursday, Bad Dog attorney Jorge Fors Jr. issued a statement saying the suit had been settled.

"The lawsuit filed in Miami by Bad Dog Productions against Warriors Boxing and Promotions, et al., has reached an amicable settlement through which Bad Dog assigned all of its promotional rights concerning Rances Barthelemy to Warriors in exchange for a payment by Warriors. The terms of the settlement are confidential," Fors said.

Haymon still faces a $300 million lawsuit from Golden Boy Promotions and a $100 million suit from Top Rank, which both contend that he is acting as a manager and a promoter -- violating the federal Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act -- and that he has repeatedly violated antitrust laws in connection with the creation of PBC.

Marco Huck, Ola Afolabi to meet again Feb. 27 in Germany

Former long-reigning cruiserweight titleholder Marco Huck and his fiercest rival, Ola Afolabi, will add a fourth chapter to their series of fights when they meet Feb. 27 at Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle Westfalen, Germany, Huck Sports Promotion announced.

Huck is 2-0-1 against Afolabi. All three of their previous bouts were exciting and competitive, with Huck, 31, of Germany, retaining his world title. Making his first title defense in 2009, Huck won a unanimous decision against Afolabi, 35, of England. In the 2012 rematch, Huck salvaged a majority draw. They met for the third time in 2013, and Huck claimed a majority decision in yet another tough, close fight.

The fight will be Huck's first since Poland's Krzysztof Glowacki scored a major upset by knocking him out in the 11th round of a dramatic fight of the year candidate Aug. 14 in Newark, New Jersey. Huck (38-3-1, 26 KOs), who was making his American debut, was seeking to set the cruiserweight division record with 14 defenses, but with the loss, he remained tied with England's Johnny Nelson.

"In my last fight, I didn't show what I [am] able to do. I beat myself against Glowacki. It won't happen again," Huck said. "I'm getting ready with my new coach for the fight on Feb. 27. I will be in top condition this time. Ola and I fought three very hard and close fights in the past, which were all decided in the last rounds. But now I want to end this chapter with an early KO victory and end it once and for all."

Afolabi (22-4-4, 11 KOs) traveled to Argentina in April and lost a unanimous decision to Victor Emilio Ramirez for an interim cruiserweight title. He bounced back impressively on Nov. 4, when he traveled to Kazan, Russia, and scored an upset fifth-round knockout of Russian contender Rakhim Chakhkiev, the 2008 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist, to win a minor title belt, which he will put on the line against Huck.

"We're off to Germany to fight Marco Huck for the fourth time," Afolabi wrote on social media. "I guess he's not too fond of fighting outside of his hometown. Just a job to me. I'll fight him on the moon."

Afolabi later added, "I am very pleased to fight against Huck again. Our previous battles were all very exciting and close. This time though there is a big difference: I am the reigning world champion and he is the challenger. I will defend my title because I am at the peak of my career. Huck will get what Rakhim Chakhkiev got."
