Former champ Dawson to end 14-month layoff
In a fight scheduled under the radar, former light heavyweight world champion Chad Dawson, a longtime regular on the pound-for-pound list during his prime, will mount a comeback after 14 months out of the ring Tuesday night. He is scheduled to face Shujaa El Amin (formerly Dion Savage) in a 10-round light heavyweight fight at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey, on the non-televised portion of Fox Sports 1’s Premier Boxing Champions card (9 p.m. ET), which is headlined by the Juan Dominguez-Yenifel Vicente featherweight fight. Dawson (32-4, 18 KOs), 33, of New Haven, Connecticut, has seen his career in steep decline since outpointing Bernard Hopkins in a 2012 rematch. Since then, Dawson is 1-3 with two of the losses by knockout (a one-sided beating against Andre Ward at super middleweight and his title loss to Adonis Stevenson in just 76 seconds). Dawson has not fought since losing a 10-round split decision to club fighter Tommy Karpency in October 2014. El Amin (12-8, 6 KOs), 28, of Flint, Michigan, has lost five fights in a row and seven of his last eight.
