Sergio Martinez’s Former Promoter Gives Update on Him

The career of Sergio Martinez didn’t end the way he’d hoped. But what he’s done since has shown that he’s transitioning well into a post-boxing life, according to Lou DiBella, Martinez’s former promoter.

“He’s acting. He’s doing standup comedy. He’s doing soap operas. He’s doing theater. He’s doing movies,” DiBella said on Dec. 5. “He invested his money really smartly, so he’s living a pretty good life. I wouldn’t feel sorry for Sergio.”

Martinez was once the lineal middleweight champion, but injuries suffered in his September 2012 win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. wound up derailing his career. He came back too soon, beating Martin Murray in April 2013 in front of a large hometown crowd in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He then spent more than a year on the sideline, attempting to recover.

He wasn’t fully recovered, no matter what he insisted, by the time he stepped in the ring with Miguel Cotto in June 2014. Cotto clobbered Martinez with three knockdowns in the first round, compounding Martinez’s already compromised state. Martinez fought with heart but had little else, with a corner stoppage coming after the ninth round.

In June 2015, after getting various medical exams and speaking with his team, Martinez retired. The 40-year-old hung up his gloves with a record of 51-3-2 and 28 knockouts.

His career peaked late, but the attention he got and the paydays that came with them in his final years are apparently allowing him to live comfortably now that he no longer needs to fight for a living.

:salute: sergio for having a post boxing plan and being financially set..dude has my respect for overcoming the fukkery of wbc and paper reign of jr..its a shame injuries broke him down like that

2 things i need to do

Algieri will stop Berto if they fight.. Remember who called this

Breh, I wouldn't even be surprised if that happens.

Algieri isn't a big puncher by any means, but he throws textbook shots that land flush that can snap your head back and make you respect him. He's definitely not as light a hitter like Paulie or Cory Spinks were.

Plus he's throwing around 600 something punches too and with Berto's lack of defense he'd prolly get hit with about 275 of those punches. Dude's eyes will be swelled up as fukk.

I still wouldn't count Berto out though, but I wouldn't favor or put money on him in this one if it happens.
