Lineal champ has nothing to do with a belt. Belts get passed around, stripped, dropped, but the lineal title is only through weight division heritage.

Technically the first man to be champ is the lineal champ and you only get the title of lineal champ if you beat the lineal champ.

No belts needed.

Hopkins cleaned up the division and was the true lineal champ. His lineage passed it to Cotto. Cotto dropped his belt, but the fight still took place at MW. He passed the lineal title to Canelo. Had Cotto won he would have still lost his belt, but he would have retained being lineal champ.

Canelo could drop his belt and GGG could get his belt and he could beat Lee-Saunders and be unified champ, but he isnt lineal champ until he beats Canelo.

Look at why Canelo didnt want to fight for a belt at 154...it was because Mayweather was the man at 154, so he knew any belt he won was worthless. I am not a Canelo fan, but I respect him because he respects the history of boxing.

Also look at Fury saying he would drop the IBF belt if he had to face Glazkov. He didnt care about the belt, because he will always be lineal champ until someone beats him. Doesnt matter if Wilder's belt is more "prestigious". Klitschko held the historical lineal history title (man who beat the man who beat the man).

There is no actual belt for being lineal champ. Lineal champ is only accomplished by tracing the historical roots. Think like tracing your family tree or a purebred animals pedigree.
Being lineal champ is far more prestigious than a organizations belt. There is no politics in lineal history. You only get recognized when you beat the guy who holds the divisions true historical #1.
