Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation have advised BoxingScene.com that Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs) is no longer scheduled to appear on the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez HBO Pay-Per-View, which takes place on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The exact details of what transpired have yet to be confirmed.
Ward returned to the ring back in June and stopped Paul Smith in nine rounds. It was his first fight since November of 2013. The majority of Ward's layoff was due to a shoulder injury and his legal war with late promoter Dan Goossen. The lawsuit was eventually settled earlier this year and Ward signed a lucrative promotional pact with Roc Nation Sports.
Ward, in what was going to be his official light heavyweight debut and the first bout of his new multi-fight deal with HBO, was going to face Alexander Brand in the co-featured slot.
Even with Ward being off the show, the PPV undercard is still stacked with fights. Takashi Miura defends his WBC super featherweight title against Francisco Vargas, Randy Caballero defends his IBF bantamweight title against Lee Haskins, and Jayson Velez throws down with Ronny Rios in a Puerto Rico vs. Mexico showdown.
