Danny Garcia: Spence Needs Better Wins Before a Shot

Posted by: Rick Reeno on 9/20/2015 .

By Rick Reeno

Former WBA/WBC junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18KOs), who recently moved up to the welterweight division, believes rising prospect Errol Spence (18-0, 15KOs) has yet to prove that he's worthy of receiving a crack at the top fighters at 147-pounds.

For Spence to get a top guy at the weight, he needs to face - and beat - a better level of opposition, says Garcia.

During several of his recent interviews, Spence demanded a fight with WBA 'regular' champion Keith Thurman, who openly agrees with Garcia's opinion of Spence.

Thurman told BoxingScene.com that Spence is a very talented fighter, but at the same time he's done nothing to justify the fight.

Garcia wants to see Spence face, and overcome, some form of adversity in the ring. Spence was seen in action on September 11th in Canada, where he systematically wiped out Chris Van Heerdan in a one-sided contest.

"He's a good young fighter, making his way up in the division...making his way up. But he has to fight good fighters to be an elite fighter. At least get punched in the mouth a couple of times before you fight a big fight," Garcia replied when asked for his opinion of Spence by BoxingScene.com.

"To be honest with you, you have to face adversity. To me, when a fighter faces adversity and wins - then he's ready for a big fight. You can never not face adversity and never fight a top fighter and then [think you're] getting a title shot. Any time you have a championship fight, you've got to face adversity [before you get to that point]."

Being perfectly honest I can't say I disagree with Swift and Thurman's points about Spence's comp so far. Dude hasn't even fought a Soto-Karas level fighter yet.

You know, ward should just let him get the bigger purse :manny:
Neither are big draws but nobody will defend ward wanting an even split or more. Public perception will always be against him in a fight with little g. He might as well accept the smaller purse, get the easy win and become a bigger star.
Surely American Hero Andre Ward (a man who impresses even BATB :wow:) should; go from making 2mm fighting a nobody in his own backyard--to conceding 50% of a mega purse to a dude who hasn't made $2MM in one fight, isn't as popular nor is he an american hero. All for public perception? Ain't wu tang for the kids?

Four years ago it was Danny Garcia, Three it was Keith Thurman. These dudes are too scared of the financial risk, much less than actually fighting him.

Sometimes in life you have to make sacrifices, the son of god should understand this more than anyone.

Go look at Errol's record and you will see he hasn't fought any of the gatekeeper/rugged vet/midlevel comp that one should have on their resume before getting a title fight or even being someone to take seriously when they call you out. His best win so far is against Van Heerden and he sucks.
I want to see Errol in there with a Paulie Malignaggi or fight Leonard Bundu. Right now it is way too early in his career progress for anyone to seriously be contemplating taking his challenges serious.

He's ambitious, as is any up and comer. I like the Paulie idea.

I don't even fault Errol for calling out any and everybody...but no one besides Errol himself should be taking his challenges seriously right now. Damn sure shouldn't be trying to say that fighters are ducking or scared to fight him.
