WBC Prez on Cotto-Canelo vs. GGG-Lemieux - Weight

Posted by: Victor Salazar on 8/26/2015 .

By Victor Salazar

New York: The fight between Miguel Cotto (40-4, 31 KO’s) and Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s) will be fought at a catch-weight of 155 but will have the WBC world middleweight title at stake. The WBC has mandated that the winner of Cotto-Canelo must fight the winner of Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s) and David Lemiuex (34-2, 31 KO’s)

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman can see a mixing and matching of these 4 fighters happening and being great for the sport.

“Boxing is going through a great moment,” the sanctioning body president told BoxingScene.com. “Having Golovkin-Lemiuex and Cotto-Canelo and the winners fighting each other; this could be a great series of fights between the 4. Just like the days of Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran.”

There is much speculation that if Cotto-Canelo is a close competitive fight that both fighters would opt for a rematch instead of fighting the winner of Golovkin-Lemiuex. Should that happen, Sulaiman remains firm on his ruling.

“The agreement is clear,” Sulaiman explained. “This is the same ruling that involved Canelo-Cotto and Golovkin. Golovkin has stepped aside from this bout and the winner of his fight, fights the winner of Cotto-Canelo. It’s an agreement which he is involved. I don’t like to anticipate or be disrespectful to those fights. The future has a very formidable horizon if it goes to where it’s ruled”

A week ago Team Golovkin stood firm that a fight between their fight and Cotto-Canelo would have to happen at 160 and not a catch weight. Though Sulaiman agreed on the ruling, he would not oppose to a catch weight to the fight if it was negotiated by the promoter and fighters involved in the fight.

“The WBC and the rules in boxing have weight divisions. 160 pounds is the division’s weight limit. If there is an agreement between the parties, that’s an agreement between the promoters and the fighters. We have nothing to go against it. That’s an agreement they have. If a fighter comes in 157, 158, and 159, they are in the middleweights division. If they have an agreement they're not breaking any law.”

Benavidez-Di Rocco Title Fight Ordered By WBA

Posted by: Jake Donovan on 8/27/2015 .

By Jake Donovan

After more than 11 years in the pro ranks, Italy's Michelle Di Rocco will receive his first crack at a major title.

Whether or not it's the type of fight that defending champ Jose Benavidez Jr. is looking forward to remains to be seen. It will have to be his next fight, however, if he wishes to hold on to his title.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has ordered the unbeaten super lightweight titlist from Arizona to next defend against Di Rocco, the sanctioning body's mandatory challenger. The announcement was made Thursday morning, with negotiations to begin immediately.

"Both parties have 30 days to reach an agreement," announced Gilberto J. Mendoza, longtime WBA president. "Contracts must be in the agency’s offices no later than September 25, 2015."

The fight comes on the heels of another WBA 140 lb. title fight being announced, as Adrien Broner and Khabib Allakhverdiev will fight for a separate version of the same title. Benavidez Jr. received an upgrade from interim to full titltist after two moves:

  • Previous claimant Jessie Vargas vacating his crown in favor of a welterweight showdown with Timothy Bradley;
  • Former World super lightweight champion Danny Garcia announcing his intention to campaign in the welterweight division

Benavidez Jr. (23-0, 16KOs) picked up an interim version of the title with a disputed 12-round points win over hard-luck Mauricio Herrera last December in Las Vegas. The 23-year old has since made one title defense, a 12th round knockout of Jorge Paez Jr. this past June at home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Di Rocco (40-1-1, 18KOs) has won 23 straight wins since suffering the lone loss of his career, a 7th round stoppage at the hands of countryman Guiseppe Lauri in Sept. '07. Included among his current win streak is a revenge knockout, stopping Lauri in the first round of their April '12 rematch.

In addition this being his first shot at a title, Di Rocco has never fought outside of Italy and will likely have to travel abroad unless local promoters or investors are able to make a massive purse bid to keep the fight at home. Doing so will require their having to satisfy any terms presented by Top Rank, Benavidez' promoter.

Should the two sides fail to come to terms, a purse bid hearing will be held on September 25 at WBA headquarters in Panama City.

Im wondering why #3 ranked Amir Imam was skipped over for #4 ranked Di Rocco (Benavidez) and #5 ranked Khabib (AB) for Championship fights.:jbhmm:

Prime Mosley at 135 probably steam rolls Pac who's best natural weight was feather. Mosley was so fast & strong bruh. He's one of the few ATG lightweights that would make a Duran fight competitive prime for prime
manny is more skilled IMO.

PAC at 140 vs Sugar shane is a close fight but ill take PAC. :ghghgh:

I think PAC's footwork and boxing skills are severely understated :francis:
