Rest in Peace Harold Johnson

By John DiSanto – PhillyBoxingHistory.com
We just received the very sad news that former world light heavyweight champion Harold Johnson passed away this morning (Feb. 19) at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 87.

Johnson, a stylish technician who fought the very best of his era during his 25-year professional career, won his first share of the title in 1961, unified the crown in 1962, compiled an overall record of 76-11, 32 KOs, and entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993. He was not only one of Philly’s very best, he was truly one of the very best boxers of all time.

Details regarding his death or funeral services have not been released yet.

Deserves its own thread, but I don't have the time to make a good one.

Dan Rafael chat wrap 2/20:

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao:
- Sitting and waiting like the rest of us for Mayweather to tell us if there is a fight or not.
- He has been piecing together information on all the aspects negotiated. He didn't want to fully write on it until the fight is announced.
- The May 2 date was agreed to 100%. Would not be surprised if someone wanted to move it to give more promotion/training time.
- During the chat someone from Pacquiao's camp called him and told him they are not trying to move the fight to a later date.
- He had not seen SAS's segment on First Take and had not heard anything official of someone wanting to move the date.
- Last fight to generate nearly this amount of buzz? Lewis-Tyson.
- This fight is much bigger than Hagler-Leonard.
- Yesterday was the first time since negotiations were close in 2010 that he actually thought the fight was going to happen. That said, he still will remain skeptical until it is officially announced.
- If Mayweather-Pacquiao does indeed take place 5/2, Canelo-Kirkland will take place 5/9.
- He has heard that both networks will get to replay the fight simultaneously at the same time.
- Expect very few public sale tickets to be available. He has been told ringside seats are priced at $5,000 and the cheapest seats are $1,000.
- If Mayweather ends up fighting someone other than Pacquiao on May 2, he believes the public and media negativity will be brutal.
- He has never actually heard of a fighter insisting that they are the one who has to announce the fight.
- Heard that Lampley would do play-by-play and Bernstein would do color commentary.
- Thinks that Buffer and Lennon, Jr. will do the ring announcements for their respective fighters.
- Neither 24/7 or All Access would be used for the fight, but rather each network would do a documentary on its fighter.
- Biggest celebrity star studded crowd he went to was ODH-Mosley 1 at the Staples Center. This fight would make it look small time.
- Weight limit would be 147 lbs.
- Undercard is still totally up in the air, but TR has told him they would consider putting Lomachenko on.
- If Pacquiao were to beat Mayweather would he be TBE? No.
- He has already written most of his story for the announcement of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao and is ready to release it if the fight gets announced. And he would end the weekly chat early if Mayweather announced the fight.
- He along with other reporters and people negotiating the fight feel like the whole process to get it to the finish line has been very frustrating.
- Bigger entourage: Floyd or Manny? Tough, but Manny.
- Uses $400 million as a rough estimate of what this fight could gross.
- Believes that the PPV may not be as expensive as $100.

Rest of the chat:
- Imagines HBO will buy N'Dam-Lemieux.
- Thinks Murray could go 12 vs. GGG, but could also see an 8th or 9th round KO. Thinks that GGG will get the KO.
- No site announced for Matthysse-Provodnikov. He has heard it will be on the East Coast.
- HBO's plan of April 18th is to do a split site broadcast with: Matthysse-Provodnikov and Crawford-Dulorme.
- Abraham vs. Smith? Abraham.
- Would love to see Broner fight Matthysse or Maidana (again).
- Did he think LSC actually wanted to fight Rigo? No.
- Haymon and ESPN are talking about doing a monthly series on ESPN. It is a long way from being done, but is being discussed. He would not be surprised it if got done. It would most likely mean the end of the current FNF.
- Potential opponents for Cotto? Rios or Bradley.
- Sean Monaghan is a great guy, hard worker, and an exciting fighter. He would like to see him get an opportunity vs. a top opponent, although does not think he ever will be a 175 lb champion or championship level fighter.
- Picked Lacy to beat Calzaghe. Calzaghe winning wasn't an upset, but even hardcore Calzaghe fans must admit they didn't expect it to be such a lopsided win.
- Nobody knows yet the end game on how Haymon is planning to turn PBC profitable. Selling ad space and tickets will help recoup some of the costs, but they are expected to lose money by putting on these events.
- Alex Saucedo is a prospect worth keeping an eye on, but he wouldn't say we should have high expectations for him.
- GGG says fighting in Europe is important for him and the fight will be shown in over 100 countries.
- Doesn't think much of Stevenson vs. Bika.
- JMM is out with a knee injury and will not fight until Summer at the earliest.
- Thinks Frampton-Avalos is a good fight. Expects Frampton to win. Would love to see Frampton fight Quigg or LSC.
- Would not consider Lee beating Quillin an upset. Understands why Quillin is favored, but he has been inactive, and Lee is a determined fighter with good power.
- Gonzalez-GRJ is a very interesting fight. Gonzalez has great power, but a weak chin. GRJ has speed and defense, despite not having great power and a chin that people constantly question since the amateurs (although it has always been fine).
- Verdejo vs. Lomachenko is not being considered. Verdejo still needs more pro experience. This could be a great matchup down the road. Lomachenko did beat Verdejo in the amateurs.
- Believes we eventually will get GGG vs. either Canelo or Ward.
- GGG is close to being able to get on a PPV. It will just take the right opponent.
- At 160 he doesn't think there is one opponent who could beat GGG. His toughest competition would come from 168, Ward and probably Froch.
- Floyd vs. GGG? GGG.
- Thinks that TR has its own TV deal in the works with a major cable network to combat against what Haymon is doing.
- Paul Williams HOF? He was a really good fighter, but not a HOF'er.
- Ivan Calderon HOF? Yes, 2nd best Strawweight ever after Ricardo Lopez.
- Most disappointing fight that marinated for a long time and happened well after it should have? RJJ-Hopkins 2.
- Mikey Garcia's problem is not with TR and is not threatening to leave to Haymon. Mikey has told him that he does not "love" fighting and does it because he is good at it and can make money. He believes he is looking for fights that pay him a lot of money, otherwise his heart is not in it to fight for the love of fighting.
- Nothing definite set has the undercard of Wlad-Jennings, but Sadam Ali vs. Francisco Santana is a good possibility.
- Thought the Brian Rose stoppage over the weekend was very poor.
- He thought Martinez beat Murray in a close decision and Sturm deserved to win as well.
- Roc Nation may have another show in April.
- Unclear if Lucian Bute is still with Roach after signing with Haymon.
- Possibility of GGG ever fighting Kovalev? Highly unlikely. GGG is not a big MW and has not even fought at 168 yet.

Another Gold Medal
- Undercard is still totally up in the air, but TR has told him they would consider putting Lomachenko on.

3+ million people getting to watch Vasyl "Hi-Tech aka Pretty Boy Loma aka Ukrainian Prince aka South Paw Will O The Wisp aka Dos Medallas" Lomachenko do work. All for the low low prince of 99.99 :999:

- Verdejo vs. Lomachenko is not being considered. Verdejo still needs more pro experience. This could be a great matchup down the road. Lomachenko did beat Verdejo in the amateurs.

Tier 1 skill level Team Krackdagawd undefeated against Puerto Ricans :sog:
