MATTHYSSE NOT IN BRONER’S IMMEDIATE PLANS

Mike Stafford, the trainer for former three division world champion Adrien Broner, says that Lucas Matthysse isn’t in the picture right now for Broner at 140. They’re looking for a softer target that is similar to the guy that Broner just defeated in Emmanuel Taylor last September.
Matthysse is someone that they’d fight only if there’s a title on the line and he’s standing in the way of the title.
The fact that Broner’s management isn’t interested in putting him in with Matthysse is really telling, because it shows quite clearly that they have some concerns about Broner being able to succeed in the 140lb division. Those concerns weren’t there when Broner was fighting at lightweight.
Back when Broner was in that class, he was ready to fight anyone in the division because he was considered to the No.1 fighter in that weight class. But things have changed since then now that Broner has moved up to welterweight and suffered a loss to Marcos Maidana. Broner moved down in weight to light welterweight after the loss to Maidana, and Broner has not looked good in his two fights since moving down in weight.
“Right now we’re just looking for someone to get it on with that’s just like Emmanuel [Taylor]. We’re just taking our time and picking the right opponents for Adrien [Broner],” Stafford said to Theboxingvoice.com.
It’s refreshing that Stafford is willing to admit that they’re cherry-picking for Broner because not a lot of people would have admitted what Stafford confessed to. Granted, it’s not exactly promising that Broner is being carefully guided to avoid the best fighters because it shows that he may not have a long shelf life at 140 unless they can get him a title after WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia moves up in weight or if they can somehow beat IBF champion Lamont Peterson. In that case, Broner might be able to avoid Mayweather for a year, perhaps a year and a half before he’d be forced to fight him.
“If he [Matthysse] can keep up the same pace as we can I think eventually we’ll make that fight but we going for something else right now, but who knows we may take Matthysse if he’s in our way for the big prize,” Stafford said.
Well, the only way Matthysse won’t keep up at the same pace is if he fights someone like Danny Garcia or Mauricio Herrera and gets beaten by them, because they’re the only guys that would give Matthysse trouble at 140 other than perhaps Viktor Postol.
