A Bantamweight? Kiko Martinez?By Jake Donovan
Jhonatan Romero was hoping for a notable name in the opposite corner for his first defense of the 122 lb. title. The unbeaten champ gets his wish, as he will face Spain's Kiko Martinez on August 17 in Atlantic City.
The bout will serve as part of a televised tripleheader on HBO, with middleweight titlist Daniel Geale defending against British contender Darren Barker in the evening's main event.
Romero makes his first ring appearance since winning the vacant belt earlier this year in a well deserved split decision over Alejandro Lopez.
Talks were in place for his first defense to come against former bantamweight titlist Joseph Agbeko, who made a triumphant ring return earlier this year following a forced 15-month break. The two camps were close to finalizing but negotiations ultimately hit a wall.
In came Martinez (28-4, 20 KO), a perennial bridesmaid at the top level of the 122 lb. division. The Spaniard is best known for his shocking 1st round knockout of Bernard Dunne back in 2007, as well as his all-action style. He is coming off of a knockout win over David Marchiano, which in turn came on the heels of a heartbreaking 9th round knockout loss to unbeaten contender Carl Frampton late last year.
The upcoming title defense marks Romero's debut on cable giant HBO.
The chances of IBF super middleweight champion Carl 'The Cobra' Froch taking on Hammersmith's George Groves in his next fight increased dramatically after the IBF ordered the pair to reach agreement by July 12, for the contest to take place before the middle of October.
This will come as welcome news to promoters Matchroom, who represent both fighters and have been keen on Groves being Froch's next assignment after the Nottingham champion successfully defended his title against Mikkel Kessler at the O2 in May.
IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker was quoted as saying in The Sun:
"Adonis Stevenson was the mandatory but got tired of waiting for the opportunity to fight Froch and moved up to light-heavyweight to box for the WBC title.
"Under the rules, when that happens we go down the list to see who is next. We got down as far as Groves, and he has been made our mandatory challenger for Froch."
(For info: In the latest IBF super middleweight ratings published on June 10, positions one and two are conveniently 'Not Rated'. Third place is occupied by Dominican Edwin Rodriguez, with Lucian Bute, who Froch demolished in May last year to first win the belt, placed fourth. South African Thomas Oosthuizen, who recorded a split decision bore draw with Brandon Gonzales on the weekend, is placed fifth, with Groves at number six.)
Tucker continued: "We have sent letters to both fighters, dated June 10, and asked them to start negotiations for a mandatory defence. The boxers will have until July 12 to come to an agreement. If they can’t, we will then call for a purse bid."
Presumably, Matchroom won't want it to go that far, as purse bids could lead to all sorts of promotional shenanigans. Of course, Froch could decide to vacate the IBF title should a more lucrative opportunity arise, but in reality, there isn't one. Expect an agreement to be reached between the pair soon for a PPV clash in October.

A Bantamweight? Kiko Martinez?
No offense, but there's other guys like Mijares, Mathebula, Montiel, Hugo Ruiz, WV2, Ishimoto (guy who upset WV2) and others who are much better fights.
Sounds like they're trying to legitimize a "showcase" fight...
word @SuikodenII you need another public medium besides this thread on this forum...you have a lot of knowledge to share about boxing
