Oscar Valdez: I'm Not Ducking Shakur Stevenson; Berchelt Is A Way Tougher Fight

Oscar Valdez gets aggravated every time he hears or reads that he is ducking Shakur Stevenson.
The former WBO featherweight champion can’t understand how Stevenson or anyone else could think he is avoiding Stevenson when Valdez has taken what he considers a more difficult fight against Miguel Berchelt. Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) and Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) are set to fight February 20 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
ESPN will televise the bout between Berchelt, the WBC super featherweight champ, and Valdez, his mandatory challenger. Valdez told BoxingScene.com recently that’ll gladly make his first title defense versus Stevenson “when” he beats Berchelt in their 12-round, 130-pound championship match.
“It’s not true. Obviously, there’s no ducking on my side,” Valdez said. “I’m not scared of fighting no fighter. I try to make that as clear as possible. But why fight someone under [Berchelt], when I’ve got a main goal right now? Anybody would wanna fight the WBC world title fight. I do believe Miguel Berchelt is a tougher fighter than Shakur Stevenson. All due respect to Shakur Stevenson – I’ve got nothing against him. But if I come out victorious with Miguel Berchelt, I would gladly fight Shakur Stevenson. I have no problem fighting him.”
Stevenson was his mandatory challenger when Valdez vacated the WBO 126-pound championship in 2019 to move up to the 130-pound division. The left-handed Stevenson (15-0, 8 KOs), a 2016 Olympic silver medalist from Newark, New Jersey, easily out-boxed Joet Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs) in October 2019 to win the WBO belt Valdez gave up.
Valdez reiterated, however, that he didn’t duck Stevenson when he moved up four pounds.
“There’s no ducking anybody,” Valdez said. “The more talking that is going on, the more that I get upset. I say, ‘Man, I just wish that we could get it on. Let’s do this. Let’s fight. Let’s give the fans what they want.’ But it doesn’t work like that. He knows it doesn’t work like this and I know it doesn’t work like this. We’ve got a fight in front of us against Miguel Berchelt, which is a way tougher fight than Shakur Stevenson, like I said. But he’s a tough fighter, for sure. He deserves a shot against any fighter – Jo Jo Diaz, Jamel Herring, Gervonta Davis or the winner of Miguel Berchelt and myself. So, I’ll gladly take it.”
Stevenson is ranked second by the WBC among its 130-pound contenders, one spot below the top-rated Valdez. Stevenson also is the WBO’s mandatory challenger for the winner of the scheduled February 27 battle between champion Jamel Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) and optional challenger Carl Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs).
“I’m the mandatory and [Stevenson is] the number [two contender] in the WBC,” Valdez said. “So, technically, I would have to fight him if I win this fight – when I win this fight, because I’m very confident that we’re gonna win this fight. I’m sure Shakur is [reading] this. We win this fight, we can make that fight. I have no problem with it.”
Dude legit had a ring gang poll in his head making that decision.
