Ryota Murata Promoted To WBA 'Super' Champion at Middleweight
By BoxingScene Staff

The World Boxing Association [WBA] has promoted Olympic gold medal winner Ryota Murata of Japan to the status of "super" champion at middleweight.

The WBA's order came down in connection to a resolution by their Championships Committee, issued on January 5.

Earlier this month, Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vacated the WBA's 'super' title at 160-pounds.

Last month, Canelo dominated Callum Smith over twelve rounds to capture the WBC, WBA world titles.

Afterwards, Canelo made it clear that he would never return to 160-pounds.

Murata has been the WBA's "regular" middleweight champion since since July 2019 when he defeated Rob Brant in a rematch. He's one of the most popular fighters in Japan.

This recent change will give Murata the luxury of an extended period of time to make his next mandatory defense. There is no confirmation if Chris Eubank Jr. - who holds the WBA's interim-title - will be elevated to the position of "regular" champion.

"Based on rule C.18, which states that the President and the Championships Committee may recognize a fighter as a super champion under special circumstances, the WBA considers Murata’s career and record as a meritorious circumstance for the appointment," the WBA stated.

"Murata’s appointment will not generate too many changes in the rankings and it is done to give dynamism and activity to the division. The only relevant change is that Murata’s 9-month mandatory defense period will be extended to 18 months."

Murata, who is 34 years old, has a record of 16 wins, 2 losses, and 13 KOs in his professional career.

It remains to be seen who Murata could fight in the weight class. Most of the middleweight names are part of the Premier Boxing Champions banner and fighting on Showtime and FOX. Murata is promoted by Top Rank - which in turn exclusively ties him to ESPN. IBF middleweight Gennadiy Golovkin and WBO champion Demetrius Andrade are also out there - but they are under exclusive deals with streaming service DAZN.

I'd bet it does 1 mil +. Too much star power, two exciting styles, it's too easy to sell.
All my friends who kinda been getting into boxing over the past couple years by proxy of coming over to watch fights at my crib, mentioned that Tank post with the Garcia/Davis fight art. I was surprised to say the least

It probably does the biggest numbers of any fight under 147 or under .. even probably around the same or more than the Spence/Bud fight we’ll never be getting.

your stars are but dust on my shoes
hell no

1 mil is a lot, plus they’re lightweights. I can’t see lightweights doing 1M

You might be right, I'm feeling a lil optimistic on my numbers for Garcia Tank/ Canelo Spence, and that could be tacking on an extra 500k buys to my estimates.:pachaha:

However, both guys are tapped in to the casual audiences, and the Mexican - African American rivalry is still extremely lucrative. If Wilder Fury 2 grossed 850k sales, I feel confident that they can be pushed to an upward of 1Mil.

I think if Tank vs R.Garcia happens this year, it does 1 mil plus. Those 2 will market the fukk outta that fight. Tank will get into some sort of fukkery and will make his rounds on all the blogs and hit the Breakfast club, etc.. and Ryan will be making videos and doing collabs with all the youtubers and celebs he knows. Plus we'll prolly get a fire undercard too. Both are coming off big ko wins against their best opps too. Fight has a lot of positive factors riding with it.

I don't see the fight doing 1 million don't think either of of have built a big enough legacy to field that. While some casuals( on Ryan's end) will watch most still don't know either of them. You have to be wildly known to grab 1mm buys.

600-700k more realistic imo
