Edgar Berlanga Wants Gabe Rosado Now, David Benavidez (Much) Later
By Sean Nam

Published On Mon Jan 4, 2021, 10:24 AM EST

Knockout specialist Edgar Berlanga is making mince meat of the opponents that have thus far been put in front of him, but he has a potentially more sturdy option for his harried matchmakers to consider: Fellow Puerto Rican and 168-pounder Gabe Rosado.

“Shoutout to Gabe Rosado,” Berlanga said on a recent Instagram Live session. “We could probably make that fight happen for the people, for Puerto Rico. For Puerto Rican Day weekend, we could make something happen.

“There ain’t no harsh feelings or none of that with [Rosado]. At the end of the day it’s about the fans and making good fights happening.”

Berlanga (16-0, 16 KOs) is undefeated as a professional and has knocked out every single one of his opponents. What’s more he has never made it out of the first round – a flashy statistic, no doubt, but it has also been something of an albatross for his matchmakers at Top Rank who have been trying to find more resilient challengers appropriate for him at this stage of his career. Now, in some corners, there is growing demand for Berlanga to face somebody more credible.

Berlanga insisted that this would happen sooner rather than later.

“Everybody always says ‘He ain’t fight nobody,’” Berlanga said. “Listen, relax. I’m stepping up in competition. Next year we stepping up competition. Y’all are so impatient.”

Berlanga was last seen in the ring knocking out Ulises Sierra in the first round on the Shakur Stevenson-Toka Kahn Clary undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegason Dec. 12. Berlanga has been busy during the coronavirus pandemic, going 3-0 since the shutdown. His recent victory had him singing his own praises on social media:

“2.2 million viewers saw my fight on Saturday making it one of the highest rated fights of 2020 and I showed everyone I’m the next big thing. I’m now a main event attraction and I want that money that comes with it.”

Still, Berlanga put the brakes on a potential fight with fellow 168-pounder David Benavidez (23-0, 20 KOs). His priority now is to see what it is like in the second round first.

“That’s an amazing fight, man,” Berlanga said. “Benavidez, a great fight for me.

“But before I get to him I gotta prove myself. I gotta get some rounds in and prove myself to the critics. Not just them but for myself.”

He has to because there's no where else to go...if he ducks Devin when he's the mandatory challenger and doesn't even fight another champ to justify it, it's going to look bad. He has to fight either Dev, Tank or Teofimo next. Ain't no way around it. Might as well take the biggest money fight of the 3 and pray he wins. If Ryan loses he can bounce back and still have a good career.
Oscar kind of alluded to him going on a canelo gameplan after the fight. While Ryan is verbally saying he wants to fight him Oscar don't think he's ready

All 3 of these guys outwardly ducked Haney

Teo quit the wbc elimination tournament in 2019 , asked for franchise championship so he doesn't have to fight him.
Loma you already know
Ryan he's haney mandatory and don't want to fight him :deadrose:.

Is Haney that damn good to where he's being ducked by every fighter :dahell:. If the kids being ducked at 22 imagine when he's 25-30

There’s just no money in fighting him, I don’t think anyone is afraid of him

This makes no sense he has a higher purse volume then fighting a bum like Luke Campbell. He also has a belt.
Outside of any of them fighting gervonta theirs literally no other bigger fight to be made money wise.

What you mean to say is the risk isn't worth the reward. You going in that fight 50/50 at best where as you go in others with a large chance to win and still get kind of rewarded.

Luckily Haney has a solid following too so they can't blackball him forever, he kind of makes sense financially too just not as much as Tank, Garcia or Teo.

Haney met all these guys already in some shape or form, sparrings or something. Went 3-3 with Garcia in the amateurs but he won all the last 3 so where things headed wasn't favorable for Garcia. But Garcia improved since too tbf. Would favor Haney to beat him (and Tank and Teo)

I don't think they would be outward scared of him though they just steered one way or another by their promoters.
I think Lopez would fight Haney, he was the first name he mentioned after the Loma win but Arum wasn't that enthusiastic about it, started to talk about how he'd rather have him fight Ryan Garcia. Of course also the Loma situation (for what Haney was criticized). Haney might be unproven yet but all that tells me Arum and his guys see Haney as a threat, it's the logical explanation (and that could be a good signs too tbf as TR matchmakers are probably the best ones)

Don't think Oscar wants Garcia to anywhere close to Haney either. Tank is a dangerous fight too but I rather see them taking that one as it's bigger money atm. As for Garcia the kid sounded beliveable to me when he said he wants to run it with anyone, but that's up to a person if they believe it or not... sounded enthusiastic enough to me... but it's not entirely up to him probably.

Haney will get his test either way if not Garcia then Fortuna. Fortuna is a tough veteran, arguably should have beaten Easter, would be a good test too. Not like Haney wasnt tested at all so far but it would be a step up. The Dominican guy Haney beat recently, Alfredo Santiago looked pretty good too despite losing almost all rounds, I can imagine him making some noise later.

basically. really hate that excuse for the reasons you mentioned
could see it making sense in terms of cross promotional bouts since both sides need to make money but Haney claims he's a true free agent and none of these dudes make purses to the extent it would be hard to generate a profit. talking about he doesn't bring enough money really a purse duck

Garcia regenerated well from the KD, Khan's chin was always shytty
Getting hurt and staying hurt is worse than just getting dropped but clearing up immediately
I actually think khan might have a better chin, or he just hides it better.
Prescott, Garcia, Alvarez are big punchers.

plus Ahmir was able to survive the maidana fight.

He’s not a big name outside of boxing fans He had somewhat of a chance to up his profile against Gamboa but he didn’t really move the needle. There’s no big money being made with DAZN involved if you’re not Canelo, that’s where Haney messed up.

You’re right It is a risk versus reward situation in the sense that guys aren’t in a hurry to make a limited purse on a tough fight (especially outside of your stable). I want the best to fight the best but that business of boxing has changed.

I don’t think anyone is afraid of Haney especially after the Gamboa showing.

Ref helped him a lot there
I think Khan has a bad defense and very slow to regenerate.
