Sadam Ali vs. Jaime Munguia Set For May 12 in Verona

By Miguel Rivera

The fortune of Mexican junior middleweight Jaime Munguia has changed for the better.

A few short weeks ago, he was being considered as the replacement opponent for Canelo Alvarez, who due to a positive drug test was forced to withdraw from a planned rematch with unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on May 5.

But the local commissions rejected the idea of that bout, because they felt Munguia was too inexperienced for such a contest and he was also coming up in weight.

Eventually, Team Golovkin took a pass on Munguia and finalized a deal with Vanes Martirosyan.

Earlier today, it was officially announced that Munguia will challenge World Boxing Organization (WBO) super welterweight champion, Saddam Ali, on May 12 in Verona , NY.

HBO will televise the fight.

Munguia is replacing mandatory challenger Liam Smith, who withdrew less than a week ago with an illness.

Ali is making his first defense after capturing the world title last December in Madison Square Garden with a big upset win over Miguel Cotto.

This will also be Ali's second contest in the junior middleweight division. The United States Olympian will be a big favorite in the fight.

Munguia, 21 years old and born in Tijuana, Mexico, is undefeated with a record of 28-0 with 24 knockouts, while Ali has a record of 26-1 and 14 knockouts.

The Mexican boxer has trained for weeks in California with Robert Alcázar, who was coach of Oscar de la Hoya, Jessie Vargas, Edwin "Inca" Valero and Jose "Chon" Zepeda and although he did not finalize the opportunity for the shot against Golovkin, the Tijuana native did not stop training.

In the HBO televised co-feature of the card, Rey Vargas will defend the WBO bantamweight title against Azat Hovhannisyan.

Coulda sworn I saw a few reports, Sadam Ali and Liam Smith were supposed to fight. Wonder what fell through.

I don't know him or his team(aside from his coach) but I see them a lot and he is looking real good in the gym. How much did he make in that Cotto fight that nikka looks like he is balling he has like two physical therapist rubbing him down after his workouts and shyt every day :dwillhuh:

HBO was throwing money at people for Cotto's retirement fight.......he probably got a couple M's. But he's been a TR project since forever, I'm sure he's got quite an allowance+his own stacks.

Wait--is he even signed to bob anymore?!

Ali is with GBP now just like Munguia

Oscar must really trust in this Munguia kid...

RING named him prospect of the year I personally don't see that at all. Saw him 2-3 times I think and what I noted is that he is a pressure fighter/brawler who is really big for his division and punches hard but relatively easy to hit and seems slow af which won't improve as he is getting older.
Ali might outbox him if he can make dude respect his power just a little, cause Ali seems faster, smarter, better on his feet based on what I've seen so far.

So it can be Ali giving him a boxing lesson or we find out that this dude really has a good ass chin and stamina so he bombs out Ali sooner or later in the fight.
Maybe this dude is one of those Margarito or Hurd type of guys who seem slow and simple so normally you'd assume they will get picked apart by a higher level boxer but later we find out that they are just so relentless and awkward that they give fits or even beat some of the top guys... and Ali isn't a "top guy" in 154, he is a reasonably good fighter who is a small 154er and was knocked out by Jessie Vargas earlier...
