Thats what I'm thinking. Even though I didn't get the freestyles where I was at on the radio, we definitely saw the videos where I was at.

I can't say that live on radio I heard them but I can say dub tapes of shyt like that got passed around. I didn't get a dub tape of a those Big L freestyles but I wouldn't doubt it if those tapes made it down that way in NC. Friends of mine would have dubs of shyt like the Hiero/Hobo battle or some Bad Boy mixtape promos.
I knew who Big L was and had his tapes but to me there were always COC ni66@z nicer than him.... He’s definitely not some all time great. Mase and Cam would of passed him dead or alive.

and I’m from Detroit never heard of Mac or fiend.....

the land of oochie wally AND one mic
I grew up in a small country town in the South.. But I loved Hip Hop so much,.. I listened to Everybody..

I was especially in tune with NY Artist because that's where the Shyt started...

That's why I rarely argue HipHop with people who dont know the Culture... Because it pisses me off..

I remember one time i could've had a song on the Radio in NC.... I was talking Hip Hop with the Dude... and he was like... " Who is this Skillz guy that keep making these recaps" He must be New..

I never talked to dude again... Dumb I know but I used to feel like Everybody cared about The Culture as much as me..

Not a diss to anyone but if I was hearing Big L Freestyles in the Country.. I would think Everybody knew about him...

Same here.

I grew up in a small town down south and listened to mostly 90’s NY hip-hop growing up. Plus I’m a 90’s baby. And even I know who Big L is.

Funny you say that because I came across that COC shyt past when Cam and Mase were on. But a ton of shyt would get circulated from dub tapes. Not saying everyone had it like this but say for example, you had a family member or a homie of yours who would visit where you are at and they had a few tapes of shyt like that because they knew you kept up with rap shyt. That's kind of how I got put on to some people on the come up. Or there was a dude who had mixtapes from up north that got copied and re-copied over and over til it made its way to other parts of the country.

I consider him one of the greats, however, he did not have enough body of work to go by to go up against a Mase or Cam. Me, personally, he definitely influenced another level of the whole clever witty set up punchline shyt that Lord Finesse was known for.

Detroit was big on No Limit, right? I feel like everywhere you would know about Master P first on No Limit then the rest of the roster.

In the south of course, they were huge when they were on their run. I can't imagine in the midwest them not getting some love in the same way. Then again, I don't know how it all works in Detroit. You guys have your own legends anyway.

I'm not even from the US and I know who Big L was :ehh: but I also got into Hip Hop around 2000 :patrice:

If you lived in the Midwest/South you would understand why, at least If you’re objective.

1. He got no radio play
2. His videos were never on tv
3. Word of mouth - the streets/hood actually played a lot artist that didn’t get radio play, but he didn’t make the type of music that would have got any kind of play where I lived anyway. In my area, nyggas didn’t like east coast music. It was more about westcoast, Midwest and the south (rap-a-lot, no limit, cmr, suave house).
4. Nyggas go out of their way to seek the kind of rap they like. Most people who are into this part of the forum are into lyrics, and will be aware of who big l, Royce, etc are but you better believe there are many people out there that don’t know or care about the type of music they make. I have yet to hear anyone in the streets play their music.

just listen to battle truth’s music and the way he raps. He sounds like a guy that would be heavy into do or die.

I’ve listened to plenty of artist and no one knew who they were, that’s why I understand why BT wouldn’t know.

Maybe it’s me, but I feel that with platforms like hiphopisreal & 15mins stepping it up recently, as well as Math creating his discussion platform, it’s really hurt the smaller channels like angry fan, psa, and norbes. I really don’t check for them at all like that anymore. It could just be me though, but these guys are just limited with these poor audio phone call interviews.

having said that, they still have their place. It’s just hard to check for them with everyone else stepping their game up.

I never checked for them to begin with. Could never get into angryfan wit his nokia 720 camera. Hiphopisreal and 15mins stepping it up is only helping the game. If the low tier nikkas gotta suffer it is what it is!

If anything Math is proving even if the space you tryna enter is over saturated as long as u putting out quality you will rise over the others.
