The late political and business icon Percy Sutton was born in 1920 – the height of the Harlem Renaissance – when political influences in the thriving Manhattan community ranged from racial separatists such as Marcus Garvey to intellectuals who favored integration like William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) Dubois and myriad others who touted their ideologies sometimes on top of soap boxes. By the time Sutton died on the day after Christmas 2009, he’d seen the tide change many times over in his career as Manhattan borough president (1966-1977), a Harlem lawyer, social activist and entrepreneur.

In fact, he was a part of the mighty Gang of Four also known as the Harlem Clubhouse, four power brokers who literally changed the face of New York politics. His cohorts and surviving members are:

NEW YORK: NEW FEDERAL PROGRAM PAYS OFF YOUR MORTGAGE
The New Federal Stimulus Package To Pay Off Your Mortgage - Expires in 2017. Learn More.

Learn More
The Clubhouse were the men even mightier men and women sought for endorsements and support during elections. So fierce were the Gang of Four, they worked to unseat the dynamic Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Once trusted, they were difficult to ignore and defy as witnessed with Rangel’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president. Theirs was a political machine that served as a model in other major cities in the nation (Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc.).

Gang of Four mentees included Malcolm X and Al Sharpton.

The recent woes of Governor David Paterson and U. S. Rep. Charles Rangel and split Democratic loyalties during the 2008 presidential election, along with the passing of Sutton, signal the death of a political dynasty that not only affected Harlem but national politics as well.

And the burning question remains: Who will replace the Gang of Four?

:patrice: Do y'all consider 1st generation Africans born & raised in the U.S., African-Americans?
Since Africa is a continent I believe most would consider that person whatever country they come from + American. Nigerian American, Kenyan American etc. Still our brothers and sisters though, y'all just know exactly where y'all come from.

Only Men Fly, WRONG! First Black Woman to Pilot a U-2 Is Flying High & Touching The Sky
By Dez Smith - October 16, 20150756

That is just what Lt. Col Tengesdal does every day as a U-2 pilot. What’s so special about this you may wonder? Lt. Col Merryl Tengesdal is a women, an African American women and she is the first ever in history to pilot the U-2, which is a reconnaissance aircraft that gathers intelligence through imagery and instantly delivers it to decision makers.

Tengesdal has seen sights only a handful of pilots have seen and many people will never experience in their lifetime. The Lt. Col has flown to the edge of space, has seen shooting stars that sometimes skip along the earth’s atmosphere before entering. The beauty of the unique curvature of the plant earth we all live. “Flying more than 70,000 feet is really beautiful and peaceful.” Tengesdal stated to U.S. Air Force News.

But getting to do what no other African American women has ever done was no easy task. Growing up in the Bronx she had many opportunities to starry and not reach her current heights. Drugs and alcohol, hanging out with the wrong crowd were always a choice she could have made, however her mother and teachers kept her on the right course to pursue her purpose.

Always excelling in math and science she graduated in 1994 with a BS in electrical engineering from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. From there Tengesdal went to Officer Candidate School in the Navy and attended flight training after becoming a commissioned engine in September 1994.

Flying for the Navy had its rewards but Lt. Col Tengesdal had always dreamed of flying higher and set her sights on a course not many have achieved, a cross commission into the Air Force. With less than 1000 pilots, Tengesdal joined the U-2 program, where she obviously excelled and achieved her dream.

Lt. Col Merryl Tengesdal flies high, touches the sky and helps our troops from one of the most peaceful places in space.
