I dont like the assimilationist language of some ADOS who talk about they want to be full Americans. Our goal should be getting reparations then getting our own nation. We shouldnt want to assimilate into America.

We are America, what you mean assimilate into America? We aren't immigrants, there is nothing for us to assimilate into. We been here since the beginning, the ADOS movement is about Americanness and not being treated like a foreigner.

ADOS people never wanted to leave the USA and go anywhere else. When Liberia came around, only about 5000 left. When Marcus Garvey was trying to convince everybody to go back to Africa, nobody left and even he had to give up because he couldn't compete with European interests.

I am about to destroy the own nation argument because that argument is ridiculous and needs to die. Although I am all about political imagination, ,this is silly.

The entire world is full of sovereign nations now and by international law nations cannot conquered and annexed by another group.

1st, Who are we gonna take over and move into?

2nd, Who is gonna allow us to do it? The UN is gonna let us do it? Is the USA gonna let us do it? Because you are gonna need support from the international community.

3rd, With what military are we gonna occupy another another nation?

When the Jews got Israel, they the territory was under British control after it was under the control of the Ottomans. It wasn't a peaceful turnover, it was a bloody war that continues until this day. The only reason they were able to survive the initial occupation is because they had British military on their side. Then they have the American government today, on their side, giving money and weapons to continue Israel's military advantage over the entire Middle East. Two of the strongest empires this world ever seen supported the creation of Israel.

And if you think we are gonna have our own nation inside the USA, you saw how the Civil War turned out.

The political will for ADOS people to leave the USA has never been there. The will for ADOS people "to have their own nation" has never been there. Also, leaving the USA was always a cop-out to White oppression and what is owed to ADOS people. We ain't gonna leave the most powerful nation to ever exist and we built it. That's ridiculous. The USA's economic and political might has been good to us. We are the richest most prominent group of African descended people to ever exist. When people think about Black culture and Black History, they think about us.

The desire to run away isn't in our blood, we stay and get what is owed to us. We are Americans, and the only true Americans - everyone else are guests.

I disagree with him about Haiti tho. The political situation there has been so damn unstable due to constant US interference they really aren't in a position to offer much help to ADOS. I'm more understanding of their plight, the US/Colonizers wanted to made sure Haiti was always punished for kicking the Euros out and they were never allowed to be truly independent and self-sufficient.

America is our nation, what are you talking about?

Me personally, REPARATIONS isn't the only goal for us.

We truly do have a culture/identity that we created here and I want us to learn more about it.

EDIT: Why is it that no matter what, ADOS always have to leave America?

It's going to sound fukked up, but if people don't care about ADOS HISTORY, then I don't care about theirs.

We're always told "NO EXCUSES" and "PICK YOURSELVES UP BY THE BOOTSTRAPS", now we're telling them to do it and they get to make excuses?

Black Minister, Lynched for Land, Laid to Rest in Mississippi

Mar. 29, 1944 | Black Minister, Lynched for Land, Laid to Rest in Mississippi

On March 29, 1944, mourners gathered at the funeral of Rev. Isaac Simmons, three days after he was lynched in Amite County, Mississippi.

Before his death, Rev. Simmons controlled more than 270 acres of debt-free Amite County land that his family had owned since 1887. This was very unusual among black families in the South, where racism and poverty had posed obstacles to economic advancement for generations. A farmer and minister, Rev. Simmons worked the land with his children and grandchildren, producing crops and selling the property’s lumber.

In 1941, a rumor spread that there was oil in southwest Mississippi. A group of six white men decided they wanted the Simmons’ land and warned Rev. Simmons to stop cutting lumber. Rev. Simmons consulted a lawyer to work out the dispute and ensure his children would be the sole heirs to the property.

On Sunday, March 26, 1944, a group of white men arrived at the home of Rev. Simmons’s eldest son, Eldridge, and told him to show them the property line. He agreed to do so, but while Eldridge Simmons rode with the men in their vehicle, they began to beat him, and shouted that the Simmons family thought they were “smart ******s” for consulting a lawyer. The men then dragged Rev. Simmons from his home about a mile away and began beating him, too. They drove both Simmons men further onto the property and ordered Rev. Simmons out of the car, then killed him brutally–shooting him three times and cutting out his tongue. The men let Eldridge Simmons go, but told him he and his relatives had ten days to abandon the family
property.

During the era of racial terror, white mobs regularly terrorized black people with violence and murder to maintain the racial hierarchy and exert economic control. These acts of lawlessness were committed with impunity, by mobs who rarely faced arrest, prosecution, or even public shame for their actions. Black people could expect little protection from law enforcement and knew that protesting their own abuse or a loved one's lynching could result in even more violence and death.

After Eldridge and the rest of the Simmons family buried Rev. Simmons, they fled their land in fear. The white men who committed the lynching took possession of the land; only one of the six men was ever prosecuted for the murder, and he was ultimately acquitted by an all-white jury.

A history of racial injustice

Mar. 31, 1914 | Marie Scott Lynched in Wagoner County, Oklahoma

On this day Mar 31, 1914

Marie Scott Lynched in Wagoner County, Oklahoma

On March 31, 1914, a white lynch mob in Wagoner County, Oklahoma, seized a 17-year-old black teenaged girl named Marie Scott from the local jail, dragged her screaming from her cell, and hanged her from a nearby telephone pole. Days before, a young white man named Lemuel Pierce was stabbed to death while he and several other white men were in the city's "colored section"; Marie was accused of being involved.

The Associated Press wire report and accounts published by Northern papers explained that the group of white men had ventured into the black residential area to sexually assault black women and attempted to rape Marie Scott. According to some of these accounts, Marie stabbed Pierce in self-defense; in others, Marie's brother killed Pierce in an effort to defend her, and Marie was only arrested and lynched because her brother escaped. Local press reports, on the other hand, didn't say anything about why the white youth were in the black neighborhood or what they did while there, and simply claimed that Marie Scott stabbed Pierce unprovoked and in cold blood.

For generations of black women, racial terror included the constant threat of sexual assault and a complete lack of legal protection. The same communities that lynched and legally executed black men for the scarcest allegations of sexual contact with white women regularly tolerated and excused white men’s sexual attacks against black women and girls.

Given this history, Marie Scott may have been among the many black women targeted for sexual violence during this era by white men who knew that they would face no judgment or consequences for rampaging her community. Whether she acted in her own defense or was protected by her brother, Marie Scott died at the hands of a mob, the victim of a society that devalued her life and body; deprived her of the chance to defend herself at trial; and denied her right to be free from rape, fear, and racial terror.

Has Yvette clearly explained why she's against H.R. 40 now? Wasn't she for it just a couple of weeks ago?

Sunkara's premise is flawed because the fight against racism is not a 50 year issue but a 400 year issue. It has targeted ADOS specifically for 4 centuries. Reparations won't solve racism and I don't know anyone who is naive enough to think or believe it will. The need for reparations is a result of fighting against US' racism against ADOS. But it is not the core nor the cure for racism itself. Never has been.

She talked about it a few shows ago when she said she didn't like the fact that the document was so short and had not been updated in quite some time. She also said that Sheila Jackson is a politician that no one likes including her own staff. Overall she thinks that the way it stands now HR 40 seems like it is just a symbolic gesture to be put up for review but will just die never getting anywhere.

Fair. But recently, as in the last 2 years, she was actually 'for' H.R. 40, right? Sheila Jackson is an irrelevant point in this discussion.

Plus, bills can have amendments. Yvette is a political scientist so she knows that much. I hope she says exactly what the bill needs instead of only saying, "it ain't good".
