Yea, no need to “justify” or “authenticate” people’s interest for the Olympics.
It’s fun. Competition is fun. National pride on display can be fun (like a college atmosphere). And if the broadcasters do a good job of narrating what’s going on or what needs to happen, the experience is more immersive.
Plus the awareness of how other sports are played, even just in passing, is also interesting. It’s not more complicated than that.
