The Chicago sun times use to have sosa,maris,griffey and McGwire on the front page with their hr totals
It said ‘chasing maris’, griffey fell off then it was just sosa,McGwire and maris and when they both passed 61 it said chasing history. Believe it or not Sosa was just as big a star as jordan in Chicago that year

I might check the cubs convention tonight just to see the crowd reaction to sosa . One of the most beloved cubs players still alive(fergie,billy Williams,sandberg,wood Sosa ,rizzo and baez)
I use to collect newspapers with the updated totals. Fox was picking up games to broadcast during the week when they both got close. Sportscenter always leading with those two, even if they went 0-4 with three steikeouts.
Sosa was such a big deal too because he was leading the Cubs to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

1998 was the greatest mlb season.That really was a magical year.

Cubs got that wc that year too just to get promptly swept by gaytl, but ‘98 was a great year regardless. The goat hit the game winner for championship #6 then summer of sosa right after
