Yes it's an issue. Just look at some of the top teams this year. Penix, Travis were in the same recruiting class as Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. Rising will be 25 when he is the QB for Utah next year. These are not college age kids anymore. Same with Stetson Bennett. Brehs have 7 years experience at QB playing against kids. It's an unfair advantage. Big difference in development between 18-19 and being in your mid 20s.Is this really an issue? I know everyone got an extra year of eligibility due to COVID but I wouldn't make complaints about a once in 100 year occurrence.
The guys he's talking about are probably grad students with a medical redshirt, it's not that serious
Again, these are edge cases. BYU has been doing it for years sending their players on 2 year missions before they play, half their damn team is in their mid 20s. Chris Weinke won the Heisman at 28 damn near 30 years ago. It’s not as big a deal as you think it is.Yes it's an issue. Just look at some of the top teams this year. Why wouldn't it be a big deal if it can result in a school winning a championship?? And I just highlighted a few QBs, its hardly edge case in this period of time. 2 of the top 5 teams had mid twenties QBs and Nix isn't too far behind, and this coming off the heels of Stetson Bennet going back to back, but it isn't a big dealAgain, these are edge cases. Exactly my point - complaining about something that was caused by a once in a lifetime event makes no sense since it will resolve itself in a couple of years anyway. Why wouldn't it be a big deal if it can result in a school winning a championship?? No need to be facetious, we all know BYU doesn't attract that level of talent. And the issue is what's happening now, not what is going to happen a few years from now. Coaches feel like some teams have an unfair advantage due to these super seniors and I don't disagree. You stating it's going to work itself out, mean while these teams are beating everyone and winning championships.Exactly my point - complaining about something that was caused by a once in a lifetime event makes no sense since it will resolve itself in a couple of years anyway.
It can’t be that big an advantage because BYU football has been doing this since its inception. I don’t see them racking up NCs left and right and their roster is littered with 24-26 year olds due to the mormon mission
Those are COMPLETELY different situations than what Fickell is talking about. One is a religious requirement, and Weinke only came back because he flamed out in minor league baseball, and Bowden promised him a spot if he ever decided to come back. And those 2 yrs away, these dudes aren't getting FBS P5 level training and nutrition. It ain't like Stetson Bennett, who was in school for damn near 2 Presidential terms and still didn't get a degree. That's more egregious than these situations.BYU has been doing it for years sending their players on 2 year missions before they play, half their damn team is in their mid 20s.
