Country singer Sara Evans filed for divorce from former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker in August, according to Tennessee court records posted online Sunday by Scoop Nashville.

Barker on Saturday was arrested for allegedly trying to strike Evans and another person with a vehicle.

Barker, 49, was booked into the Davidson County Jail under his full name of Harry Jerome Barker, at 4:10 a.m.

The records state Barker is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from the jail just before 7:30 p.m. after posting $10,000 bond.

Barker had to be held for 12 hours because the charge was domestic in nature and domestic charges require at least a 12-hour “cooling off” period.

Repeated efforts to reach Nashville and Davidson County law enforcement officials for comment have been unsuccessful.

According to court records, Evans on Aug. 23, 2021 filed for a divorce from Barker. The filing stated Barker at the time had been living in Homewood for the past three months.

The filing stated Evans was seeking the divorce due to irreconcilable differences and “inappropriate marital conduct.”

The couple, who have been married for 12 years and have no children together, at the time they were married entered into an agreement stating “the actual reasons for divorce shall be kept private to the extent possible” and “neither party will discuss or reveal the terms of the agreement, and the terms and conditions shall remain confidential,” Scoop Nashville reported.

The Tennessean, quoting documents on file with Metro Nashville General Sessions Court, said Barker tried to run over two people who were leaving a party around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

As they pulled into the driveway of a nearby home, Barker allegedly reversed his vehicle “at a high rate of speed attempting to hit them, but missed,” according to the arrest affidavit.

The vehicle’s occupants contacted police after Barker drove away from the home, the affidavit states. Police made contact with Barker when he later drove by the house.

According to ABC33/40, quoting the same affidavit, Barker and the victim are married but separated and currently living separately. The report states there was probable cause to believe Barker did unlawfully attempt to strike the victim with a vehicle.

A court date is set for March 22 in the arrest case. The status of the divorce filing was not immediately clear Sunday morning.
