Barry Larkin won the 1995 NL MVP, even though according to WAR, he was the 6th most valuable National League player that year.
Greg Maddux was far and away at #1 with a WAR of 9.6.
Among position players, Barry Bonds led the league at 7.5 (honestly if we went by WAR, Bonds would have 11 or 12 MVPs)
But that's not what interests me so much about 1995.
The #2 vote-getter for the 1995 NL MVP was actually Dante Bichette.
Bichette slashed .340/.364/.620 -- super impressive numbers on the surface.
His WAR? 1.2.
Now WAR has its issues so I'm really curious how he posted such a low value. Even if Bichette was a disaster defensively, 1.2 is...well how can I put it? 3.0 WAR is basically all-star level. 1.2 would be like Chad Pinder this past season. So imagine Chad Pinder having finished 2nd in the MVP voting.
It's possible that there are park factors that really hurt Rockies players (Andres Galarraga posted a 1.1 WAR that season) but anyway, I found that Bichette line remarkable.
