:heh: When Michigan hired Harbaugh, my opinion was that tOSU was still going to dominate Michigan just off the strength that Michigan would be running Harbaugh's pro-style offense, while tOSU is running a modern spread offense. And that's exactly how it played out. I can't believe it's taken 4+ years & after Urban Meyer leaves tOSU for Harbaugh to finally start go in this direction.

Change is happening again at Michigan football.

And this time, Jim Harbaugh insists it'll all be moving much faster.

Michigan's offenses during the first four years of Harbaugh's tenure in Ann Arbor have been many things, but up-tempo was never really in the vocabulary. Enter first-year offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, a 35-year-old first-time play-caller who Harbaugh declared the main motivation for all this change.

Change that will feature an offense that, Harbaugh says, will take advantage of the best weapons Michigan possesses.

"The biggest difference people will see will be the tempo," Harbaugh told reporters Monday. "It's more up-tempo. Less huddle. I think that'd be (the biggest one)."

Twice he insisted that Gattis, who was Alabama's co-offensive coordinator last season, was the biggest reason why.

Harbaugh says he has been following Gattis' career for some time. He wanted him on his staff. He wanted him to run his offense. And he wants him to call plays for Michigan.

"I read an article when he was coaching at Western Michigan, or heard from somebody, maybe Bill Cubit. When Josh was at Western Michigan, he'd been there a month and Bill was introducing him to his son or somebody and said 'Son, this is coach Josh Gattis. Talk to him and get to know him, he's not going to be here long,' " Harbaugh said. "The players he's developed at each stop — Western Michigan, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Alabama — it was eye-catching."

Michigan's offense, specifically the components of its passing game, should be the strength of its football team in 2019.

The Wolverines will bring back senior quarterback Shea Patterson after an efficient year as a 13-game starter last season. Wide receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tarik Black and Nico Collins are all juniors now.

Alabama co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis walks on the field prior to the team's game against Arkansas in 2018.

Harbaugh said Monday that Peoples-Jones and Collins were rehabbing injuries at the beginning of spring ball Sunday, but when all three are back together, they'll be the biggest weapons in Michigan's offense.

And, it appears they'll be featured as such.

Harbaugh spoke about the team's plan to start playing fullback Ben Mason both ways. He'll spend time as a defensive tackle and a defensive end this spring while repping at both tight end and fullback. Perhaps in part because Michigan won't be using a fullback as much moving forward with a faster-paced offense.

This is likely music to all Michigan fans' ears, as Harbaugh spent plenty of time Monday checking off all the boxes most appeared hungry for after a disappointing close to the 2018 season.

"I don't know if it's that big of a philosophical switch and to Josh's credit, he's done a phenomenal job of coming in and looking at our personnel and what we did well with the run and pass game and protections and making it cohesive with his system," Harbaugh said. "It's blended really good. Coaches have done a great job of making that happen. The tempo is big. That's a huge change. Huddling to not huddling. That's big. And some other things.

"But it's good. It has more of an attacking feel to the offense in terms of tempo and in terms of going down the field in the passing game. Some other things. Different personnel groups, that's the same feel we've always done with multiple personnel groups. You're attacking in that way. Attacking in terms of multiple formations. Put in an RPO and it could be a run or a pass. ... I like that there's an attacking feel to it that the defense has to be aware of. And the tempo feels good, too."

Harbaugh said earlier this winter that Gattis will call the plays. He maintained that Monday, saying Gattis is the coordinator and will be the play caller. That is a significant depature from Harbaugh's first four years here, as he served as a large voice in Michigan's generally collaborative play-calling plan with former offensive staffers Tim Drevno, Jedd Fisch and Pep Hamilton.

Now, it's Gattis' show.

And Harbaugh says it is up to the rest of the staff, himself included, to learn it and make it work.

He also noted the current quarterback depth chart features Patterson at No. 1, with Dylan McCaffrey at No. 2 and Joe Milton at No. 3. He said all of them are sharing reps this spring and added that "there's no possible way Shea Patterson will just be able to put his feet up" with regard to that competition.

So, once again, it'll be an interesting spring.

"We're learning (together) with his style of offense, contributing where we can. (Gattis) really good at explaining it, showing us how to coach it," Harbaugh added. "For me, it's been really good. Really enjoying it. Really learning a lot."

"He's a really great coach. The staff is working really good together. Everybody's met. A lot of meetings. A lot of time on task to get to (the first day of practice). We've kicked off spring practice and it was really good."

Better late than never fam. :francis: I think Harbaugh finally realized that even tho he was the golden boy.. that heat was starting to get to him. He's not irreplaceable and I think he was starting to feel it. The boosters, alumni and fans were starting to get a lot louder.

^^ that was the most important part of the whole write up. He needs to take that CEO role and stay the fukk away from calling the plays. Let Gattis do his thing.
