2017 NFL Combine Stock Report: Quarterbacks

Stock Up

Brad Kaaya, Miami
Brad Kaaya gets a stock-up arrow, but it has to come with an asterisk. Kaaya looked comfortable and made precise throws throughout the morning, but this was expected of him. Kaaya has usually performed well when given a clean pocket to throw out of, but things begin to break down for him when he's under pressure. Kaaya is made to thrive in this sort of environment, so I doubt teams will be completely fooled. That said, it was a positive day for him, so perhaps he can build off of this and reach second-day consideration.

Pat Mahomes, Texas Tech
Charlie Campbell polled five teams, asking which quarterback had the best workout Saturday. Pat Mahomes received two of the five votes. Mahomes did get downgraded by one team for his mechanics, but the rest of the feedback was positive, with some praising Mahomes for his arm strength and leadership. Mahomes is certainly in the running to be the first quarterback selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Deshaun Watson, Clemson
If you clicked on the prior link to the article regarding polling five teams about the quarterback workouts, you may have noticed that two organizations mentioned that Deshaun Watson was the top quarterback in Indianapolis. Watson was absolutely terrific, with nearly every throw being on the money. He was nearly flawless. However, as with Brad Kaaya, this stock-up arrow deserves an asterisk. The reason why teams have second-day draft grades on Watson is that he struggles to make progressions, and this obviously translates poorly to the NFL. Watson's talent or throwing ability was never in question, but transitioning to the pros could prove to be challenging. Watson will likely be taken in the first round, but he's not the slam-dunk prospect the media is overhyping him to be.

Davis Webb, California
Is it sad (for the Rams) to think that Davis Webb is a better prospect than Jared Goff? Of course, that's not saying much because most teams didn't like Goff last year. As with Goff, Webb isn't ready to play right away, but he possesses a bigger arm. He showed that positive attribute off in Indianapolis, and he looked like he belonged with the top quarterbacks in the class. In fact, one team Charlie Campbell polled thought Webb was the top quarterback at the combine.

Stock Down

Jerod Evans, Virginia Tech
Jerod Evans should've returned to school, and that was clearly evident based on his performance at the combine. He struggled taking drops from center and displayed ghastly footwork. His accuracy was shaky as well. Evans has upside, but he's extremely raw, and he likely won't be taken until the middle of Day 3.

Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina
Mitch, erm, excuse me, Mitchell Trubisky didn't have the best combine. He began the weekend by telling everyone that he has changed his first name, which seemed like an odd, albeit irrelevant choice. What's way more important is what happened in the field workouts. It wasn't that he was horrible, as he made some crisp throws, but no team Charlie Campbell polled though he stood out. It was also apparent that his mechanics also need some work. Trubisky had both Pat Mahomes and Deshaun Watson outclass him, which could be detrimental because it appears to be a tight race for the No. 1 quarterback spot.

Mahommes had the most natural arm talent of anyone. And Watson was the most consistently accurate. Kaaya and Webb will need a great Oline and great weapons to be anything

2017 NFL Combine Stock Report: Running Backs

Stock Up

James Conner, Pittsburgh
James Conner came back from cancer to have a solid 2016 campaign. He posted a 40 time similar to Corey Clement's (4.65), but did so at 233 pounds instead of 220. Conner was solid in the on-field workouts, but the best news came from his medical exam. He received a clean body scan a week prior to the combine, which is obviously fantastic news, both in football and real life.

Leonard Fournette, LSU

Dalvin Cook's loss was Leonard Fournette's gain, as there is very little doubt now that Fournette will be the first running back chosen in the 2017 NFL Draft. Fournette had his skeptics when he weighed in at 240 pounds and attributed that to water weight. Fournette then followed that up with a 28.5-inch vertical and a no-show in the broad jump. This prompted some in the national media, including the entire panel on Around the Horn, to declare that he was out of shape. In reality, Fournette looked great at 240 pounds, and he had a terrific 40 time (4.51) for a man his size. He also thrived in the on-field workouts. Fournette cemented his status as a top-10 pick, as he'll be chosen anywhere between No. 4 (Jacksonville) and No. 9 (Cincinnati).

Brian Hill, Wyoming
Brian Hill, did well to ensure that he'll be chosen on the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft. Hill ran a slightly faster 40 time than Gallman (4.54), but did so at about 220 pounds. He also notched better figures in the vertical (34), broad jump (10-5) and 3-cone (7.03). Most importantly, Hill had a solid showing in the on-field drills.

Alvin Kamara, Tennessee
Alvin Kamara was expected to run a faster 40 than he did (4.56), which was a bit disappointing at 5-10, 214. However, that was Kamara's only blemish in Indianapolis. He tested incredibly well elsewhere, posting terrific jumps (39.5 vertical, 10-11 broad). Kamara is very athletic and figures to be the fourth running back chosen in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Marlon Mack, South Florida

With Wayne Gallman likely moving out of second-day consideration, someone had to move in, and that someone could be Marlon Mack. The South Florida product thrived at the combine, as he displayed very good athleticism. His 40 isn't anything to write home about (4.50 at 5-11, 213), but he notched a 35.5-inch vertical and a 10-5 broad jump. Mack also thrived in the on-field workouts. Mack, who has drawn lots of interest from the Chiefs and Buccaneers, will likely be chosen in the second or third round.

Christian McCaffrey, Stanford
Christian McCaffrey tested as one of the best running backs in Indianapolis, and it's very doubtful now that he'll fall out of the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In fact, the argument can be made that McCaffrey is closer to Dalvin Cook than Cook is to Leonard Fournette. McCaffrey recorded a sterling 3-cone time of 6.57, the second-fastest result for a running back since 2003. He did this while recording a 37.5-inch vertical and 10-1 broad jump. In my opinion, he was the best running back in the drills. It's difficult to envision him falling out of the top 24.

Jeremy McNichols, Boise State
Jeremy McNichols is an expert in pass protection, so he's assured of a prominent role in the NFL, as long as he's not horrible in other regards. Thus, any athleticism he showed at the combine would just icing on the cake. McNichols did just that, posting a very good 3-cone time (6.93), as well as solid jumps (35.5 vertical, 10-1 broad jump). He's definitely in second-day consideration.

Stock Down

Corey Clement, Wisconsin
Corey Clement mailed in his 2015 campaign in Wisconsin and reportedly was generally unliked in the locker room, so he needed a great performance in Indianapolis to make talent evaluators forget about that. He accomplished the opposite, testing extremely poorly. He was very sluggish in the 40, running a 4.68 40 at 5-10, 220. He also had a poor vertical (28.5) and broad jump (9-7). Clement could be trending into undrafted territory.

Dalvin Cook, Florida State
Dalvin Cook was dominant at Florida State. In fact, he was so great that many believed he would pass Leonard Fournette in the 2017 NFL Draft. It's extremely difficult to envision that happening now in the wake of the combine. Cook tested so extremely poorly that conspiracy theorists may begin to believe that he was replaced by an evil, less-athletic twin after being kidnapped. Cook's 40 wasn't horrible (4.49 at 210 pounds), but it wasn't good, and it certainly didn't make up for his awful vertical (30.5), broad jump (9-8) and 3-cone time (7.27). Sports analytics say that a running back as unathletic as Cook hasn't been drafted in the first round in nearly two decades.

Wayne Gallman, Clemson
There are lots of running backs to compete with for a second-day designation, and based on what happened in Indianapolis, Wayne Gallman could now be picked in Round 4 or later. Gallman tested poorly, running a 4.60 at 6-0, 215. His vertical (29.5) and 3-cone (7.17) weren't very good either.

2017 NFL Combine Stock Report: Wide Receivers

Stock Up

Robert Davis, Georgia State
Robert Davis, cousin of Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, doesn't have very good tape, so he needed to shine in Indianapolis. He did just that, posting some terrific numbers. Davis, at 6-3, 219, ran a 4.44 40, leapt a 41-inch vertical and posted an 11-4 broad jump. Those sorts of numbers could get him drafted late as a long-term project, but he at least put himself on someone's radar.

Chris Godwin, Penn State
Chris Godwin has done nothing but improve his draft stock, beginning from the dominant performance he had in the Rose Bowl against USC. Godwin posted some terrific numbers at the combine, running a 4.42, which was very impressive at his size (6-1, 209). Godwin also notched a 36-inch vertical and a 10-6 broad jump. Most importantly, Godwin thrived in the drills, as he put on a show. I have to think that Godwin has cemented his second-round status with his performance in Indianapolis.

Zay Jones, East Carolina
If any offensive player has enjoyed a better draft preseason than Zay Jones, I'd like to know who that is. Jones has been exceptional every step away. He dominated the practices at the Senior Bowl and was great in the actual game. He then measured in at 6-2, 201, and he posted some excellent results. He ran a 4.45, which is excellent for someone his size. He also had an 11-1 broad jump and a 36.5-inch vertical. He was exceptional in the drills as well, and it could be possible that he has snuck his way into late first-round consideration. Jones will be chosen early on Day 2 at the very least.

Michael Rector, Stanford
Michael Rector had disciplinary issues at Stanford and wasn't very productive overall, so he needed a great combine to put himself on someone's radar. He accomplished just that, running a 4.42 at 6-0, 193. He also posted a 36.5-inch vertical, a 10-9 broad jump and a terrific 6.77 3-cone time. It's doubtful Rector will be drafted, but with this performance, he'll certainly garner interest as a UDFA.

John Ross, Washington
Everyone knows by now that John Ross shattered Chris Johnson's combine-record 40 with a 4.22. Even more impressive was the fact that he pulled up at the end of it with a cramp, meaning he could have potentially run a 4.19. That was the only downside, as well as the fact that he didn't win an island, though that could be for the best because black smoke monsters tend to reside on those. Ross didn't get to participate in the drills, but he notched an impressive 11-1 broad jump as well as a 37-inch vertical.

Curtis Samuel, Ohio State
If it weren't for John Ross, everyone would be buzzing about Curtis Samuel right now, as Samuel ran the second-fastest 40 among wide receivers at the combine with a 4.31. Like Ross, he hit a 37-inch vertical. Unlike Ross, he was able to perform in the on-field drills, and he thrived in those. Samuel appears to be a sure-fire second-round pick.

Stock Down

Travin Dural, LSU

Travin Dural is a poor route-runner, as his game relies on size and speed. Thus, he needed a fast 40 than most at the combine, and he disappointed big time. Dural ran a pedestrian 4.57, and his other testing numbers (30.5-inch vertical, 9-8 broad jump) were also lackluster. Dural is looking like a late-round pick.

Cooper Kupp, Eastern Washington
Cooper Kupp performed on a high level at the Senior Bowl, but that didn't translate to the combine. Kupp posted some poor testing numbers, running a slow 4.62 at 6-2, 204. He also hit just a 31-inch vertical and a 9-8 broad jump. He did well in the drills, but some teams won't want to use a selection in the first half of the draft on a 4.6 receiver.

James Quick, Louisville
James Quick did anything but live up to his name. He ran a poor 4.60 at 6-0, 186. His jumps weren't very good (31-inch vertical; 9-7 broad), and his 3-cone time of 7.00 was pretty pedestrian. Quick didn't look very draftable.

Travis Rudolph, Florida State
Travis Rudolph is a good guy, so it's a shame that he had such a rough combine. It began at the weigh-in, where Rudolph measured in two inches shorter than he did at Florida State. He then ran poorly, timing at 4.65. He also posted pedestrian jumping numbers (31.5-inch vertical, 9-6 broad). The consensus prior to the combine was that Rudolph should've returned to school, and that continues to be the case.

Artavis Scott, Clemson

Artavis Scott was a mildly surprise declaration, but it was understandable because Deshaun Watson was going to the pros. Scott, however, hurt himself in Indianapolis. He had a poor 4.61 40 to go along with a 9-8 broad jump and a 31-inch vertical. His 3-cone time (7.19) was slow as well. Scott projects as a slot receiver, so the times won't murder his draft stock, but he definitely hurt himself at least a little bit.

Dede Westbrook, Oklahoma
Dede Westbrook didn't get to work out at the combine, but that doesn't mean that his stock didn't drop. Tony Pauline has reported that many teams have graded Westbrook as undraftable. Already stricken with off-the-field concerns, Westbrook reportedly absolutely bombed the interviews. Westbrook has the talent of a second-day pick, but he likely dropped a couple of rounds because of his poor interviews.

Panthers need to draft Robert Davis in the 2nd or 3rd. Thomas Davis cousin and he should blossom into a stud with an actual QB throwing him the ball
