where you wanna go?
This is about to be a very long post(I'll try to condense it as much as possible)
I want to go to the SEC..... for these reasons
1)Cultural familiarity.... Regardless of what Oklahomans say, Oklahoma has a lot of similarities to the states/schools in the SEC. No disrespect to those in B1G country, mainly Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, but we don't have much in common, other than football; and they kinda look down on us academically(not as bad as the PAC-12 schools). The SEC is a perfect fit. Vanderbilt and MIZZOU can sponsor us for admission into the AAU if they want it that bad. It was never an issue when the Big XII had 5 AAU schools(Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska).
2)Proximity to opponents.... If OU goes to the SEC, then the longest bus ride to an away game, assuming OU is in the SEC west, will be 8 hours(1 school.... Ole Miss is the furthest away in the mock SEC west write-ups for realignment), the average trip will be around 3-4 hours. The difference isn't that big, but as a player, I'd prefer 3-4 hr trips instead of 5-9 hrs for each school. This isn't just a football issue, but an issue that concerns all student-athletes. They don't need to be spending that much time on the road when college athletics already consumes most of their time. The extra time not spent on traveling can be used toward sleep and study time. In addition, it would be more cost effective for OU to play sports in the south-central US with border state institutions and the southeast instead of going all the way to the upper Midwest or even the northeast.
3)Recruiting Territory.... This is hypothetical, but a real possibility, seeing as Nebraska is suffering the same fate. Even though OU recruits nationwide, Texas is a very important recruiting ground that we cannot afford to lose if we want to remain competitive(or elite) in football(which is driving this decision... let's keep it 100) if Texas doesn't follow us to the B1G, there is a REAL possibility that OU will lose access to that recruiting ground because most students want to stay as close as possible to home where family has access to see their children play and they have REAL WINTERS in B1G country. Kansas is/was supposed to be the original partner to join us in the B1G.... That compounds my fears. Not a bad decision though(AAU.... Great basketball program). OU needs to keep their Texas pipelines if they want to continue to see success going forward. That is the reality of the situation.
The academic administration wants B1G. The Boosters want SEC. It may get ugly.
