Former 2017 Alabama commit becomes highest-ranked recruit for new SEC team
Former Alabama commit Akial Byers commits to Missouri

Akial Byers had considered himself an Alabama commit even after he failed to academically qualify in time to sign a national letter of intent this past February. Early Thursday morning, Byers found another SEC school to call home.

Byers, a 4-star defensive tackle in the Class of 2017 from Fayetteville (Ark.) High School, announced his commitment to Missouri. Byers got the score he needed on his ACT this past February to qualify, so if everything goes well in the classroom until the end of the school year, he will be a part of the Tigers’ Class of 2017.

There was no option for Byers to be a part of Alabama’s 2017 class because the Crimson Tide do not have any available scholarships for any recruit, as evidenced by the team giving 4-star JACK prospect Jarez Parks a grayshirt this past signing day.

Byers could have delayed his enrollment until January to play for the Tide, like what Parks will need to do to play at Alabama, but the former Under Armour All-American did not want to wait until then to start college.

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound prospect took a visit to Missouri last week. He becomes the Tigers’ highest-rated commitment in the Class of 2017.
