First look at Coach Dunbar.
Nobody had the benefit of 15 games like Watson.
I'm sure on a per game basis others have exceeded his averages from last year.
Ok. We beat nobody good.
But we were the only team in college football to play 2 of the 4 playoff teams last year (Oklahoma and Alabama).
We dominated Oklahoma for 3.5 quarters. Holding them to just 3 points thru 3 quarters before our young guys collapsed.
And we went blow for blow with Alabama for 4 quarters. Even taking a lead in Tuscaloosa with less than 5 minutes. We ultimately gave up a last minute TD and lost by only 5 points to the eventual national champion. The same margin of loss as everyone's darling going into 2016, Clemson.
Watson basically didn't play 4 full games (Wofford, App St. Miami, WF). So in reality those stats are actually very much on par.
He avg. 274 passing and 73 rushing a game and could have probably avg more if Dabo and Co. just kept him in to stat pad. In games like Wofford and App St they were playing him like it was a spring game. He'd be in a for a few series....they'd put the back up qb in for a bit then put him back in. After running wild vs Mia...they took him out very early and let Kelly and Nick run the offense. Every stat Watson got last year came in the flow of the game and he took what was given to him. His passing yards would have been more if Mike Williams didn't get hurt. That took away our deep passing game and teams knew that. He had to wait for McCloud and Cain [both true Freshmen] to gain confidence and learn on the fly to make up for Wiliiams loss which is why when Cain got suspended it was a big thing because Bama knew our deep threats were not playing. I get it though....you feel Dobbs would have been everything that Watson was last season and you are hoping for it this season.
But Clemson played those teams too. Beat The Sooners twice in 2 yrs. And yes we loss to Bama by the same margin as y'all but it was for the Natty in a game many Bama cats said they should have lost if not for Special teams.
Those game went very differently. Yu guys were down double digits late in the 4th. Tennessee actually had them beat and choked. Outside of Ole Miss, Tennessee played Bama the hardest last yearClemson played those teams too. Beat The Sooners twice in 2 yrs.
