Back in the day we had award shows for rappers like The Source and Vibe awards that have had some of the most legendary rappers and moments in hip hop. Now all we get is the wack ass BET awards that seems to get worse every year.

I was about to make this thread the other day when I found those links on youtubes. this thread popped up when I was typing the title.

these parts 1, 2 & 3 are really parts 4, 5 & 6. ive still yet to find the first half of the show. I know people that claim to have it on tape, but none of them can "find it".

props on the thread tho.

this fills in some of the blanks from the 1st half of the show. cant find the 69 boyz performance:

nobody mentioned the snoop dogg/puff daddy hug where they "officially squashed it"?

its in this clip.

clip is misleading because theyre including awards that death row won the year prior.

Will is from the late 80's era. N.W.A. is also from that era. I agree with him that rap was about parting but not all rap was the same. It's easy to look at Big and Pac's deaths and blame the era but Hip Hop is not all roses, dances and block parties. There was a dark side too and that needed to be explored. He came back with "Men and Black" and "Big Willie Styles" blew. I never agreed with Em dissing him but Will was coming off way to elitist with that "Stop cussing". No you don't cuss that's good for you but not ever rapper needs to rap about PG experiences. Here is the video with Will trying to be hard:

Will Smith - Boom, Boom, Shake The Room (Vj Karnal video edit) - YouTube

cmon now. that's not acting hard.

yall trippin.

hip-hop's testosterone levels were at an all-time high. you can say that he was out of his element during this time, but to say the he was trying to act hard is an overstatement. same with when people talk about hammer during that time. and hammer would legitimately beat a lot of niccas down. i'd put money on Will to give a lot of niccas that work as well.

Haven't peeped the whole thread but has it ever been confirmed that outkast was booed after they won an award? Or was that just an urban myth?

Crazy how NY-centric this award show was tho. I know Snoop and Suge come off as a$$holes, but look at the nominees. Its like they werent paying attention to anything else that was dropping in 94-95

son, try LIVING through that shyt. I broke out in hives 4 times back then from stress randomly. in my head, everyone wanted to kill me. blunt after blunt, beer after beer. i remember one time at the spot we had gone through a few fifths of easy jesus and smoked no joke like 22 phillies....i went to pee and my vision closed up. straight up went blind and sat on the bathroom floor for 20 minutes losing my mind, thinking i had to learn braille and shyt. the my sight came back the reverse way it closed.

that same night i saw a man flipped upside down so ferociously in a living room his sneaker scuffed the ceiling and left a mark. Jet beauty of the month's all on the walls as posters. my homies sister hanging condoms on the wall on some TLC shyt.

shyt was RAW back then.

spend your teens in a crackhouse and then try and come back to the world seamlessly. impossible.

A little less extreme in my case but yeah. I couldn't roam the streets sober because common sense would tell any fool to seek shelter. Only way I could relax enough to sit out there was to guzzle a couple fortys.

On the stoop of a crack house ALL DAY... And I ain't even sell the shyt. Just hangin with my nikkas. Laying awake at night hearing gun shots every night.

:rudy:

If I recall correctly... Snoop, Dre, Cube, Eiht, Outkast, Scarface, Big Mike, Warren G, Bone Thugs, Da Brat, Rage, Coolio, etc. ALL got nominated for something. So I don't see where it was NY-centric. Those were artists from '94 who made notable music...

The belief that the Source was this pro-NY mag who discriminated against everything not from NY is a long-running myth, held up either by people who didn't read it back then or people from Cali who didn't feel they kissed their ass enough. Matter fact, The Source ran MEGA coverage on Death Row, gave good ratings/reviews to all the artists I mentioned, always ran articles and did cover stories on lots of 'em too. Most of the best music from that time whether it was East, West, South, Midwest or whereever got props in the mag, It wasn't all this super bias that everybody claims.
