Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
I see why will smith called the 92-95 the dark ages in rap. everyone was on some frontin shyt. A lot of dope music and classic records but looking back on it now its like everyone was acting hard on some street/frontin shyt.

first off, nobody was fronting... which is why nikkas regularly got shot at, robbed and killed back during these times.. this actually lead to all the studio gangsters cause labels couldn't keep taking the heat from real thugs. so they got some pretty boys to act tough

another thing, suge supposedly heard biggie complaining about puffy.. .being all in the videos, taking appearance fees, all the same shyt puff been known for.... and that's why he said what he said. he was actually talking to biggie at the time

and will smith wasn't talking bout the dark ages being fronting.. he was talking about the fact that for about 1-2 years, nothing was talked about except beef... east vs west.. diss records... i'll kill you nikka... and people was out there DOING it... will came up in the 80s. there was a balance. the 90s was all real nikka shyt.. kinda like now its all pop shyt... no balance. we go from one extreme to the other

The year was 1995 and the East/West beef was starting to gain traction. On that day in New York. The 1995 Source Awards become one of the most important moments in the History of Hip Hop. Biggie was crowned King. NaS was inspired to get a more mainstream sound. Death Row calls out Puff. Snoop calls out the crowd. Dr. Dre wins video of the year. You got Mobb, You got Wu.

Pac was in jail at the time and Suge was thinking of signing him. The beef was crazy but it was a legendary show. No lie, this was probably the biggest and most important rap awards show ever. Bigger than winning a Grammy or other award, at the time Winner a Source Award for Hip Hop was Big. I can't find the entire show but here's most of the Clips. Classic and Historic moment in Hip Hop History:

Biggie's famous "Brooklyn" Speech. Also as for the beef. Puff clearly tried to calm tensions down. He said in a speech at that show that he had love for Snoop, Dre and Death Row and he directly answered Suge Diss live on stage. But nobody wants to talk about that. Diddy didn't really start talking sh!t till after "Hit Em Up" on that Bad Boy mixtape.

You know, for all the hoopla Dre and Snoop raised in interviews condemning Suge Knight for his pot stirring ways at these awards, in terms of fanning the flames of the brewing East vs. West feud, there sure is A LOT of footage of both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg basking in this feud as well. From the jumping around when Suge gave his infamous speech to how Dre was trolling the pro-NY crowd to Snoop's downright challenge.

Biggie would still be alive today and have better albums had he took Suges advice that night and just went to deathrow.....u think he really wanted to be on Badboy when he could be on Deathrow:laff:.......but anyway great point, Snoop be on sum bullshyt now,all them nikkas who wuz throwin shots back then....talkin shyt in songs, talkin shyt on radio.....Snoop beat his case and then wanted to be on sum cool shyt and chill out he said which I understand.....its just fuked up when u see em try to throw Suge and even pac under the bus fully like he wuznt even in it:mjpls:....whether its him at this awards or its him laughin while Pac dissin Biggie at the house of blues on stage with em,,kickin over buildings, nikka u wuz there:ufdup:....he has to keep his uncle snoop peacemaker image I guess tho....I don't see people lookin down on em for doin what he did cuz everybody wuz doin it even if not as directly as he did.

This video shows how bias NYC was. Notice how when most of the west coast or southern artist are mentioned in nominations, most people didn't yell, but they yelled when east coast artist were mentioned. I think it was a little bit of jealousy, being that they were selling better then most east coast artist, and feeling like some of those songs weren't real hip hop. I can't front, I was part of that, but when I listened to the music, and stop being biased, it did sound better sonically(clean, and punchy). That is what I think messed the east coast up with a lot of people, the sound wasn't as clear as the south, and west coast. Dr. Dre made it big to me, because he had a little of that east coast knock, but being much cleaner, good dynamic range and clearer. He even stated he was going to prove you can make dirty, gritty hip hop(songs with a thumping bass, and snap), that is clean with the chronic, and he did it to me. The east coast artists who made an album that was clear, and knocking, was "Hell On Earth" by mobb deep. That album was knocking yest still clear, good dynamic range, and clean.

Also, a lot of people weren't into lyrics, as much as NYC heads, they just wanted to dance or hear some gritty tales of the street out into simple lyrics.

It's funny how times have changed. NYC is getting payback from treating others wrong, and getting laughed at from not being the spot for Hip Hop like it used to be, the south is into lyrics, and the west coast is doing the same. The lesson is never shyt on people who want to be down with you, because you might wake a sleeping giant.
