Is it a sucker move to pay a family member's debt to another for the sake of keepin the family bond cool?
Both immediate family members.

Not a sucker move but that doesn't really help anything, imo. Why can't the person that owe's pay? If they are close, why can't the person that is due the money turn it into a gift instead of a loan? Them reaching a solution is together and on their own is going to strengthen their bond way before you stepping in does.

No. Definitely not a sucker move.

I would at least have a discussion. You are not responsible, the debtor is no longer around, the family is not really responsible. If the amount is an issue for you, and you want to help, then see what would satisfy the other party before going all in.

The exchange of money seldom heals a relationship though.
