Helen Keller. We know/remember her as a courageous figure, someone who overcame so much and was a tireless advocate for the disabled.

But during her life she was a radical socialist/communist. She vehemently opposed US participation in WW1. She was absolutely despised almost unviersally.

│ Wow, I didn’t know any of that about Helen Keller. Did a quick skim of her Wikipedia and she was championing birth control, helping found the ACLU, donating to the NAACP, and fighting for workers’ rights all in the early 1900’s. And despite being blind and deaf, she still recognized her own privilege: “I owed my success partly to the advantages of my birth and environment. I have learned that the power to rise is not within the reach of everyone." Amazing.

Anesthesia scares the shyt out of me. You can have the perfect anesthesiologist and the perfect surgery and still not wake up from it.

│ My surgeon told me before a pretty minor surgical procedure: "The chance of death varies drastically depending on patient's health, the surgery being done etc... but it is never non-zero."

│ He went on to say I was in more risk driving from his office home than during the surgery.

│ But one is really scary, and one is totally benign.

│ Humans are weird.
