I’ve been looking at old Ebony mags from the 80s
Outside of the crack trade the 80s looked lit
My ma was born in ‘55, pops in ‘53. They both barely recovered from the 70’s, flamed out in the 80’s and passed away in the 90’s. Live fast, die young.. my ma was a dancer and singer, couldn’t cut it as a singer but met my pops in NYC when NYC was THEE standalone epicenter of the music industry. Pops had a little juice as a musician so he was able to bag my mother I guess..pops, ma and uncle partied hard during the disco era then my ass popped up and kudos to my ma.. she didn’t want me to be around that (failed) and kept her ass in Charlotte around family for stability and support.
Hard, hard living during the 80s as far as my ma with depression since my pops basically gave her the finger from NY... my pops did fine, my uncle excelled. Saw both sides of the 80s growing up.. the glitzy, sometimes gluttonous lives of successful black folks and the dregs of the drug epidemic in the eighties. Sad thing is that both sides eventually wore down and took both of my parents. It’s one of the reasons why my uncle refused to help me try to get into the industry.
