Like in the latest Whitney Houston Documentary "Can I Be Me?" - she wanted to be with her assistant Robin instead of Bobby and had to choose between them and she fell hard on drugs without Robin. She was with Robin even before Bobby but her mom is super religious and would never let her be with a woman, so she kept it on the low. She gave up Robin for her mom/family and her image.

The higher ups made society that way so that only a tiny percentage of the population controls all the wealth. This stuff gets deep.
