The Maia Campbell situation in addition to my aunt (mom's half sister) sparked a conversation with my mom a few days ago about mental illness in the Black Community and also how it can be hereditary. It runs on my mom's dad's side of the family. We were talking about how taboo mental illness is in the Black community and how we usually just say "Pray" and push it off on God to rid it...But it doesn't work that way and it's deeper than that.
I empathize with Maia's situation because I believe she is an only child and I feel like I am an only child despite my dad also now having two daughters. I grew up alone and still I'm not around those two. Maia lost her mom and her mom was stressing over Maia's situation even in her writing. The drug addiction makes it worse.
You see all the potential in her. You seen her at her best and now you're watching her fall from grace and no one can help her really because these demons are taking over.
