I started with cold steel as well, you're good for the first two cold steel games, as it the story pertains to just Erabonia. From there, it might be best complete the the skies trilogy, and the azure duology before playing cs3,4, and reverie.

Give the first two Cold Steels ago, and decide from there if you really want to invest in the series or not.

I feel like Trails in the Sky had better story and characters than Cold Steel. The battle system of Cold Steel is more evolved. Once you get to Cold Steel III and IV they blow the plot of Sky wide open.

If you want to experience Sky knowing as little as possible at least before CSII pause and play the first and second Sky game minimum. If not play them after. CS IV is intended for fans who played all the prior games in the series. It’s a totally different game when you haven’t followed those characters through their journey.

:russ: bruh just keep playing and decide on your own...the only real slog in the cold steel series is 2,and that's the first half only
Breh. The dialogue in Trails in the Sky is cringe , Estelle is annoying and I wish more people would tell her to shut the fukk up. Her heart is in the right place but she seems like she'd get someone killed. I find myself playing Doom more than I do this and I love JRPG's.

I feel u ... it doesn't help that in series there is a lot dialogue.....

Yea it's too many games to follow to get to the modern day. We no longer in the COVID days so the average breh ain't got time to go through all these games just to catch up lol..but cold steel is a solid series,so is the cross bell saga.

I actually played crossbell and realized I needed to play the other games. I like Crossbell for the mystery. I feel like if Estelle gets more serious about her father being gone I'd like it more. Like your dad is missing on a hijacked ship. You're still acting like a goof? Why? The mystery of her father is compelling but she seems too much like idk a Shonen protagonist if that makes sense. Joshua seems like he's more concerned than she is.

I like it so far even tho it's kinda slow. It's like Persona minus the charm and personality. The early games footage reminded me of Ys Origins which I liked, but I'll finish CS 1&2 first before I go back

Honestly starting in CS 3 this series has run into the issue of having TOO much dialouge. Like in Sky and Crossbell it was a lot but starting in CS 3 it started being too much.

But overall its a solid series. When the writing is good like pre CS 1 it gets to be really fukking good. When the writing becomes a mess, well at least we have the world building which is the one top notch consistent thing with this series.

Lets be honest here with how easy it is to break CS I - IV even on nightmare gameplay also felt more of a hassle and uninteresting to me. A battle system evolving doesn't matter if it never challenges you.

At least with Reverie they expect you to go with broken builds so in that way its more engaging.

So the consensus is cold steel is the worst of the lot?
It goes Crossbell > Sky > Cold Steel to most. My top 3 games are in order Sky SC, Trails to Azure, and Cold Steel III.

Cold Steel is the worst of the English released series. It really suffers for Rean being the main character. They went overboard with how they praised Lloyd in Crossbell but Rean was even worse. He’s a boring harem lead elevated for no reason and all the women fall in love with him derailing their characterization later in the series when bonding.
