Rean became a tolerable character to me in III when he went from student to teacher. The game still constantly builds him up like he’s some special guy when he’s really a doormat goody two shoes.

I could see skipping Cold Steel and playing this first. It’s not really going that deep into the plot of Cold Steel or Crossbell. I mean a member of Class VII shows up and does reference stuff in general but if you didn’t play those games you wouldn’t know what they’re talking about.
Cold Steel III really is one of the best games in the series though. It’s worth playing and if you ignore the harem aspects IV is good too. IV is definitely a game you should play after Sky, Crossbell, and the other Cold Steel games. It’s pure fan service for long time series fans in the second half.

both him and llyod are a bit too goody two shoe asexual nikkas, like always gotta feel guilty a bytch is fine...and in cold steel everything revolved around him that some of the side members felt that they had no real meaning without him been around ... Still he's far from the worst protagonist i've seen in a JRPG

the way cold steel 2 ended should make you motivated to play CS3. AND THE WAY 3 ENDED BEST BELIVED YOU ARE GONNA WANNA PLAY PART 4 ASAP, but hey different folks , i pretty much played all these back to back to back to back and the only one that felt like slog to get through was cold steel 2
The ending to Cold Steel III is the most brutal cliffhanger I've ever experienced in all of media. Everything was just going nuts and the game just stops on a dime and ends. I still remember staring at the screen stupified like it can't end like this.

Starting the Finale and unless something major happens it really feels like this game didn’t do all that much to advance the overall Trails story. It did connect to Reverie stuff and some stuff from the Crossbell games but I don’t really feel much further plotwise than I did at the start.
Unfortunately I heard the sequel to this game is much worse in that regard.

This might sound dumb but what is the “overall” Trails story exactly? I always took it that these games were their own franchises that loosely connected from being in the same world with events taking place in roughly the same geography but little more than that.
Now this is coming from someone whose only played the Cold Steel portions and i’m aware some characters from other titles pop up here and there but I always took that to be fans service.
The stuff dealing with the true nature of the world. At the end of Cold Steel IV they talk about how they can’t really leave the content of Zumuria.
Then there’s whatever the hell McBurn is.
Sometimes people say words that the people of Zumuria hear and can’t comprehend.
Then there’s Ouroboros and the Grandmaster and their objectives. I think it’s still the phantasmal blaze plan. Either way Ouroboros has been conducting experiments with the Sept-Terrions to accomplish something.
These things they keep teasing are all leading to a finale.
