You know it just hit me. Everyone argues from the standpoint of Joel or Abby. Yet I can't remember any of the Abby backers ever saying that they personally agree with/would be as selfless as Ellie. It's always "we needed Ellie to sacrifice herself" and not "I would've been fine being sacrificed".
It's very telling in hindsight.
True
If it were me i’m not sacrificing myself for the good of humanity, especially as a black person whose dealt with racism. I want to LIVE.
And I wouldn’t sacrifice any child of mine either.
Well, of course, most people wouldn't have sacrificed themselves or someone they are close to.
Anyway, Abby and her crew didn't know about Ellie, and that wasn't the reason why they tracked down Joel. It was purely about revenge (especially Abby because of her dad).
Also true
Which is why its good storytelling to have both Joel and Abby as complicated characters with good factors and bad factors and both have points of view that make sense.
As a matter of fact, if there is any criticism I can level towards the series its that it never really shows this “dark and cruel” Joel that everybody keeps referencing. Everything he does up to killing off the fireflies is pretty level and understandable. He never kills anybody just for the hell of it or out of bloodlust. He spares people who aren’t threats to him. He never robs anybody or cheats anybody. The Joel we meet in season 1 is pretty laid back until its time to get active. He’s not power hungry. Dude just wants to live quietly and protect his brother and later on Ellie.
We could have done with some flashbacks showing the darker, more ruthless side of Joel in the time before he met Jess when he and Tommy were doing any and everything it took to survive.
