Outside of the initial trailer, how many people would have come into the game knowing this?
I'd wager a lot since 16 million views were in this trailer alone. I'm just saying this wasn't some low key secret. If THIS is the only thing that people are up in arms about then the reaction is overblown.
Someone spoiled it to me here on a xbox thread out of all places. Nobody was even talking about TLOU .Some fool in TLR posted a spoiler and ruined it for me. I was doing a good job avoiding spoilers too

I know Ellie is lez, but that's already out there. Can't see people getting mad about that unless the ending extends on the consequences of being one.

Ok...there are two kinds of people that are mad about the spoilers (THERE ARE NO SPOILERS BELOW)
the ones that are mad that Ellie is a lesbian and that this game has gay representation - these people are morons, it’s always been known she is a lesbian ect. This has been blown way out of proportion.
the other people are the ones who are upset with the actual direction the game takes, while I am going to wait and experience it all within the games writing and context, I do understand why some people would read the spoilers and be disappointed in this sense...but like I am, before writing the game off, they should play it first, I saw the spoilers for the new ending of the FF7 Remake and hated it, once I actually played through the game it was nowhere near as bad
I’m still hyped as fukk to play it

Honestly, this sounds like if you saw the last 15 minutes of Avengers Endgame and immediately thought the movie was trash because of it. Every great story has plot points that work in context with the overall theme. Everyone complaining hasn't played the game for themselves, so even if someone might know what happens, there's still so much that has to lead up to certain events. Events we don't know about.
I'm sure people will hate it either way because that's just how things go these days. Especially with Ellie being a lesbian. But I mean, who cares? LGBT folks exist in the real world too and gotta do real world shyt, it's not that serious. However, there's a difference between proper representation and pandering for the sake of appearing "woke".
People did this same clown shyt with FFVII Remake, and look at how amazing the game turned out to be. People complained about how Persona 5 Royal should've been a DLC instead (even though this had been a thing since at least P3, just like Kingdom Hearts and Final Mixes). There's always gonna be people who are unhappy with something, but I'm going into every game with temepered expectations. I don't wanna be influenced by someone else opinions, I want to form my own conclusions.
If the endings were the only thing that mattered, why even have forms of storytelling? It's always about the journey in between that matters the most, nobody talks about the games that had a trash story but a fire ending -- because in order to have that amazing ending, you need a great story to lead you there.
So with that being said, I take absolutely none of the complaints seriously. If these people haven't played it from beginning to end, then I think it says it all. If it's a bad game objectively even after you've seen all there is to see, then it is what it is, but that's a bridge that should be crossed when we ACTUALLY get there in June.

It’s basically the “we didn’t ask for this” crowd complaining about the major twist and shocking/surprising moments.
In regards to the sjw complaints, people are calling a character transgender solely based of the way they look however, everything I’ve read and seen doesn’t say they are. It’s just a interesting character model

As someone who noticed a "spoiler" thread for this game a week ago but paid no attention to it, and is completely oblivious to what the hell is going on, how big are these alleged spoilers?
Does it spoil how the game ends?
Like the difference between telling someone who hasn't watched Endgame: "It involves time travel" (mild spoiler) vs "Black Widow dies, Ironman dies, and Falcon becomes new Cap." (Doing too much)
What spectrum does it lander closer to?
