Because Trump desires to be an autocrat like Putin. In fact the whole MAGA movement is a push to make our society an oligarchy like Russia. Russia and now America under Trump both share in their opposition to democratic norms. Democracy is the greatest threat to authoritarians like Trump and Putin. And its the greatest threat to the billionaire oligarchs who support them. Trump also recognizes that aligning himself with other autocrats (Putin, Orban etc) helps legitimize authoritarian governments on the global stage.
This is why MAGA is a lot more nefarious than people think. Its part of a global agenda to usher in fascist and authoritarian regimes across the world. And some of the world's wealthiest people are behind it ( Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, David Sacks and a host of Russian oligarchs).

Russia is an adversary to the US and Vlad would love to Nuke us into dust. They turn a blind eye, and likely take a cut of, cyber operations such as ransomware directed at U.S. citizens, businesses and organizations (think schools, hospitals etc.).
They also threaten our allies, whose support we need to project strength and maintain order across the globe.
I think many people, especially Americans, have been spoiled by peace. We assume calamity can't possibly reach us. Maybe. But when nukes start proliferating and erstwhile allies start making other arrangements and pacts, things can get dicey in a hurry.
And if it does, people will wonder how we ended up there.
