FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Woody Johnson, the Jets’ owner, said he was “very optimistic” that the team would rebound from its disappointing 2011 season but declined to discuss the consequences for Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum if the team misses the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

Unlike Jeffrey Lurie, his counterpart in Philadelphia, who last week suggested that Andy Reid would be fired if the Eagles finished an “unacceptable” 8-8 again, Johnson would not comment on the job security of his coach and general manager, citing his policy. Johnson singled out Ryan for praise, saying that his conviction in him has not wavered.

“In terms of my confidence in him, I’m very confident in Rex Ryan,” Johnson said Thursday afternoon. “You just have to look at the body of work. It’s unparalleled in our history.”
