I think what works is that you'd expect Reynolds to be the one cracking all the jokes, but he's actually the straight man of the group. Sam Jackson is the one coming with all the one liners.

Plus Sam Jackson's character was actually a bad motherfukker in the movie. Ryan Reynolds was just along for the ride most of the time.
