Listened to a good podcast on this today. You have to start all the way back to the founding of Kievan Rus in the 9th century. Over the next 1000 years Ukraine(the term was only used in the past 150 years or so) that land has been ruled by a whole range of people(Polish, Russians, Lithuanians, Mongols, Cossacks,etc). They made a good point of explaining how Putin has tried to rewrite history concerning its founding.

EDIT: Putin truly believes in the 18th century line of thinking that Ukrainians are fundamentally Russians and shouldn't be their own sovereign nation. They even went far enough to ban the Ukrainian language from being taught back then. That went up until the Russian Revolution.
What gets me the sheer insanity of placing that line of thinking on today's reality. He believes he's a czar incarnate and needs to recreate the Russian Empire.

No he doesn't. Putin is not a communist. He is probably the richest person in the world, and the Soviet Republics were autonomous.
